ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN “We will create consent drawings, architectural plans, 3D renders, construction administration, interior design, right through to furniture and fit-out designs. Based in Pakowhai, Architecture and Interiors Ltd (ArchInt) provides a comprehensive range of residential and commercial architectural services across the Hawke’s Bay region. Founded in 2003 by Melissa Burne, creative director and architectural designer, the practice is run by a skilled all-female team of architectural designers, interior designers, and an office manager. With a passion for exceptional design and a commitment to friendly, personalised service, ArchInt specialises in new home design, renovations and additions, commercial building projects, interior and kitchen design, custom joinery, detailed wall elevations, and 3D BIM and CAD renderings. “We offer all of it,” says Melissa. “Right from the start to the end. We will create consent drawings, architectural plans, 3D renders, construction administration, interior design, right through to furniture and fit-out designs. We offer a complete package.” One of ArchInt’s recent award-winning projects is the design of TR Group NZ’s Hastings branch in Omahu Road, featuring a training office, truck yard, and a 350sqm office space on a 10,000sqm site. The project earned the team the 2024/25 Resene Total Colour Commercial Interior Office Award, recognised for their striking and innovative use of Resene paint throughout the interior and exterior. The judges’ response to ArchInt’s bold design was: “When working with a corporate colour palette, it takes a certain adeptness to apply those colours to best serve their setting. This project does this brilliantly, using the client’s daring hero hue (TR Group yellow) for powerful accenting supported by a monochromatic base. It’s an immersive branding experience, which operates at a commercial level while still bringing out the little kid in all of us. It’s bold, bright and brilliant.” “TR Group NZ wanted to find a larger yard for the trucks with a purpose-built office, workshop shed, and training facility,” Melissa says. “They wanted something nice to represent their company. They had a specific brief for outdoor spaces and staff areas. We worked with the local branch manager to find a site that was suitable and fit their needs.” The new TR Group NZ Hastings site was designed to support the company’s continued growth after outgrowing their previous premises. Bold precast concrete tilt-slab walls, painted in TR Group’s signature yellow, create a striking visual identity and eliminate the need for extensive signage. Built by Alexander Construction, the project features Eurostyle Epic cladding from Roofing Industries and durable, low-maintenance Colorsteel roofing. The building was completed in late 2023. With a strong focus on sustainability and health and safety, ArchInt integrated features such as rainwater tanks, solar panels, and sustainable materials into the design – complemented by bold use of the TR Group’s brand colours. The Hastings team requested that half a truck cabin be incorporated into the office interior, repurposed as a fridge and eye-catching conversation piece. A lot of thought went into the lunchroom and extensive outdoor area, with signature “TR” tables and matching steel beam shelving creating a unique interior and social exterior space. “It suits them as a company. They are extremely happy with the building and proud of the spaces we created for them. We made the whole building represent the company both inside and outside,” Melissa says.. Another recent project that the ArchInt team is especially proud of is their own, purpose-built office in Pakowhai. The building features a striking yet simple gable form, constructed with precast concrete for both its aesthetic appeal and functional performance. Melissa favours precast low-maintenance concrete for its raw beauty and excellent insulation properties – a stand-out feature of many buildings the company has designed, including the award-winning TR Group facility on Omahu Road.
