92 | Enjoping growth in Taupo The growing breadth of in-house specialisation is further strengthening Mātanga Project’s position as a quality project management partner in the district’s civil works sector. Mātanga Projects T T Kim Newth “Stage 1A civil work is due to be completed by early August, and local building companies in Taupō have been engaged to build the first 52 homes.” DEVELOPMENT Taupō’s top civil project management company, Mātanga Projects, has almost doubled the size of its team over the past 18 months, thanks to a growing focus on survey and civil design within the business. Since early 2024, company founder and director Brad McKenzie has grown his team from six to 10, with the addition of two more civil designers, another surveyor and a new project technician. The growing breadth of inhouse specialisation is further strengthening Mātanga Project’s position as a quality project management partner in the district’s civil works sector. In the local area, Mātanga Projects regularly works for the Taupō District Council on projects designed to make a positive impact in the urban environment. For example, Mātanga Projects is project managing and serving as the council’s engineering rep on a prominent project that’s revitalising Taupō’s popular paved lakefront area. “With stage 1 finished, we’re now on to stage 2 of that project,” says Brad. “With the design work done, we’re currently working through contractor procurement ahead of the physical works that are due to start on site this October. It is exciting for Taupō, as this latest stage will double the size of the area being renewed.” Mātanga Projects has also been working on various roading rehabilitation and roading improvements throughout the district, with their growing strengths in civil design and survey increasingly in demand. “For example, we have designed two major intersection projects that are changing to roundabouts, so as to provide more safety and accessibility for our local community,” says Brad. Council-owned land to the south and east of Taupō, known as the East Urban Lands, has been earmarked for affordable housing development. Mātanga Projects is proud to be part of the consortium involved in this important development work, providing oversight and project management. “Stage 1A civil work is due to be completed by early August, and local building companies in Taupō have been engaged to build the first 52 homes.” Mātanga Projects has also been project managing papakāinga initiatives, focused on housing for local Māori communities. The largest of these has delivered 14 new homes in Waimahana. The team is working on three other papakāinga projects – another in Taupō and two in Rotorua – each comprising four to 10 new dwellings. As well, Brad is working as project manager at Kokomea Village Park, which includes a new 134-villa retirement village called LakeCrest. Stage 2 (23 villas) is now finished, with stage 3 and 4 earthworks and civil works about to get underway. Project managing commercial and industrial development is another area of expertise for Mātanga Projects. Their team delivered the full service package – project management, survey, MSQA and civil design – to a thriving new development on the edge of town, by Mātanga’s office on Napier Road. NPD Fuel, Popeyes chicken, Burger King and Starbucks are already established on-site, with Bunnings also set to build new premises there. A new industrial property development on council-owned land at Crown Road in Taupō is yet another significant venture project managed by Mātanga Projects on behalf of the council, with Camex Civil. “We completed that two months ago, and it’s a massive development that will create a lot of new jobs too. Taupō is holding very steady this year,” Brad says.
