94 | Development Nous DEVELOPMENT These acquisitions brought directors Aaron Brittin and Kelvin Landon into the business, strengthening its multi-disciplinary capabilities. Development Nous operates internationally with team members in Sweden and South Africa, including senior staff that previously worked in the Hastings office before relocating overseas. This global approach has enabled the business to operate effectively around the clock, with projects progressing through different time zones to maintain momentum and efficiency. “There is a genuine shortage of skilled professionals in our disciplines across New Zealand, and this is even more pronounced in regional areas like Hawke’s Bay,” says Karl. “When we grow our team, we grow our impact – it’s as straightforward as that.” As the company continues to expand, Karl says plans are underway to extend services towards the western area of the North Island, building around the Palmerston North office as quality staff members are identified. Projects showcase consultancy’s expertise The Iona development in Havelock North, one of the largest residential projects in the Hastings District for decades. Karen Phelps Development Nous has undergone its first major rebrand to reflect the company’s growth and transformation over a decade. “We were essentially after a refresh following the successful completion of the mergers, and approaching 10 years of business in the Hawke’s Bay, to give us a lift from the original branding that we completed during the establishment phase,” says Karl Carew, director and licensed cadastral surveyor at Development Nous. He says the rebrand reflects the company’s evolution from a small startup to a multi-disciplinary consultancy offering services in surveying, civil and structural engineering, landscape architecture, town planning, and project management. Karl says the new identity aims to convey trust, professionalism and innovation alongside maintaining the approachable character that has defined the business. The timing of the rebrand aligns with significant progress on major projects that showcase the company’s capabilities. The Iona development in Havelock North, one of the largest residential projects in the Hastings District for decades, represents a cornerstone achievement for the consultancy. “Development Nous is the lead design consultancy on the Iona Development for CDL Land New Zealand,” explains Karl. “Our involvement has included full civil and subdivision design, surveying and UAV services, landscape and planning documentation, as well as managing the construction documentation and site supervision.” The Iona project, identified for residential growth since 1993 and rezoned in 2018, comprises three distinct neighbourhoods across varied and challenging terrain. Stage 1 is currently under construction, with first titles due for release this year and the remaining stages under consideration by local councils with construction programmed to commence, pending decisions in 2025. Alongside Iona, the company continues its involvement in Brooklands North, an extension of decades of development work in Havelock North. The project, part of the Brookvale/Romanes Structure Plan, will deliver approximately 600 mixed-density residential lots by 2030. “The first area of the Structure Planned neighbourhood is Brooklands North, which comprises 104 lots over six stages,” says Karl. “All six have been consented and engineering approval has been completed for the entire subdivision.” Development Nous, which was established in 2016, now employs over 40 staff across offices in Hawke’s Bay, Palmerston North and South Africa. The company’s growth has been supported by strategic mergers with established local businesses. In 2022, Development Nous merged with Shanley Surveyors, operating since 1931, and Design Phase, a leading structural and civil engineering consultancy.
