Director Dylan Coull built the Otorohanga property as his family home, combining a modern living space with a large workshop, under one roof. The project reflects the type of practical, high-quality rural construction that has become a hallmark of the business since it was established in 2017. The 240sqm building includes a 78sqm home alongside a spacious shed that serves as a workshop for the building business, while also providing room for the family’s children to play. Dylan says pole shed homes are a popular option because they can be adapted to suit almost any lifestyle. “They are incredibly versatile,” he says. “You can keep them really basic or even rustic, or you can dress them up with higher- end finishes. While pole shed homes are sometimes viewed as a cheaper alternative to a conventional house, Dylan says that is not always the case. “People often think they cost less to build, but that isn’t necessarily true. A standard home can be just as affordable. One advantage is the speed of construction, and having the house and shed combined is a really practical solution for people on lifestyle blocks or farms, who need storage for machinery, equipment, or recreational vehicles.” The project was the first pole shed house Coull Builders has completed, giving prospective clients the chance to see the concept firsthand. Although the style appears straightforward, Dylan says building with exposed timber poles presents unique challenges. “The poles are natural trees, so they are never perfectly straight or uniform. We have to work from each individual pole and make everything else around it level and plumb. Those are the kinds of challenges we enjoy because they really showcase quality workmanship.” Growing up on a farm inspired Dylan to establish his own business after beginning his building career at 18. “My parents were farmers and running their own business, so it was always something I wanted to do as well. I’ve always had a real passion for building, and I love to deliver a quality product with a clear, straightforward, and stress-free building experience.” Today, he runs the business with wife Jemma and delivers new homes, renovations, farm buildings, and rural construction projects throughout Otorohanga and the wider King Country. Coull Builders is also offering customised turnkey home packages, allowing buyers to personalise colours and finishes before receiving the keys to a completed home. Despite a slower housing market, Dylan remains optimistic and says the business continues to focus on quality, communication, and personalised service. “We’re a small team, so clients deal directly with us throughout the project. I’m on-site most days and we pride ourselves on keeping people informed every step of the way. We genuinely care about doing a really good job, and that’s what people remember when the build is finished.”
