Founder, Cameron Smith, whose career spans commercial construction and high-end residential builds, works directly on every project to make sure the building journey is a rewarding experience that delivers exceptional results. Cam made the decision to start his own business four years ago while building a house for his own family. From the outset, he has been dedicated to bringing the same standard of care and craft he devoted to his own home to other residential projects across the region. “I work very closely with the client, drawing from my personal experience of going through the process of building a house and knowing what the expectations are,” says Cam. “We’re building homes for young families and local people; we like to look after them really well, communicate clearly and manage the whole process to take the stress out of it.” Honest conversations on budgets and timelines are part and parcel of that process, ensuring that dream plans are priced accurately and built efficiently. Word-of-mouth referrals from satisfied clients continue to build the company’s growing portfolio. Working with Cam on-site is CJS Carpenters’ foreman, Mitchell Davis, a talented builder known for his accuracy, reliability and practical know-how. “Rounding out the team is Bruce, who has loads of experience and is so capable,” says Cam. “We all complement each other really well.” Cam has also developed excellent partnerships with skilled industry professionals, such as Ollie Potts-Smith of Optimal Plumbing, and other trusted tradespeople, suppliers and architects. While there is ongoing demand for newhome builds in the region, CJS Carpenters says many existing homeowners are currently choosing to spend money on renovations rather than selling to build new. It is leading to some exciting home makeover projects for the team. “For example, we are currently working on the final stages of a pretty large project in Ōtāne,” Cam says. “We’ve already built a two-storey extension on to an existing rural home there, and are now renovating the rest of the house. It has been an 18-month project for us and we’re really thrilled with how it is all coming together.” Another quality renovation – the Webster Renovation, featured on their website – highlights how structural updates and heating upgrades can transform how a home feels and functions. “It shows how just a few small changes can make a big impact too. Even if the project is only a master bedroom suite or a kitchen and living room renovation, we’re happy to help.” CJS Carpenters are licensed building practitioners with a deep understanding of Hawke’s Bay conditions and requirements. Another project highlighted on their website, Elsthorpe Road, started as an urgent flood repair after Cyclone Gabrielle before growing into a full home renovation. “We’ve done heaps of work helping rebuild people’s lives affected by Cyclone Gabrielle, including helping my own parents, whose home had to be rebuilt after it was flooded out,” says Cam. That past experience informs CJS’ current practice of how new homes are designed and built for resilience and longevity well into the future.
