He stayed with his father’s company Homeworx Design & Build after completing his apprenticeship until he eventually set up Meechan Builders in 2009, motivated by having a young family. “It was a big step, but family is important to me, and I wanted to have the flexibility to put time into the kids. It was busy but it meant I could take them to school or go on camp and make up time working late or over the weekend,” he says. Once Meechan Builders’ first job was successfully completed, building four small rental properties on the same site, word of mouth did the rest and work continued to flow. Meechan Builders generally targets new builds although for the first few years they did decks, fences, and renovations to fill any gaps in between projects. Today they fill any gaps with their own spec builds, moving between them and the architectural projects they enjoy building for clients. A recent two-storey, 283sqm architectural build in Napier’s Parkland’s subdivision involved enough engineering and scheduling challenges to keep things interesting, Tony says. “It’s nice when you have to use your brain and really focus on the plans. We had to crane the Gib board for the wall lining upstairs and some other materials once the second-storey floor was complete. “The kitchen and living are upstairs with a beautiful outlook over to the Poraiti Hills, so a couple of big sliding doors open out onto a timber balcony with glass balustrade which makes the most of it.” Its exterior cladding features a mix of smooth, dark, vertical weatherboard contrasting with a lighter cream, rough plaster with negative detail. It’s a contemporary look they also used on a spec build they sold to a retired couple relocating from Gisborne recently, this time with soft green contrasting with a gentle white. Tony has found that designing a house with a young family in mind means it has universal appeal: around 200sqm with four bedrooms, ample storage, fully insulated, with a family-friendly layout, they target a $1m to $1.2 million dollar price range. “The main thing is to build a quality home that you know is sound, that there won’t be any issues with, and that whoever moves in is going to love,” says Tony. Over the years Meechan Builders has built up a team of subcontractors Tony knows he can trust. “Everybody plays a part in the final home, and I aim to use the same ones on every job. I know they’ll turn up and it’s not just about making money; they really want to do a good job and build a good home and that’s important.” It’s one of the reasons he’s comfortable giving clients a completion date when they ask for it, even though he knows it’s the one thing they’ll not forget. “You’ve got to be pretty careful when you’re giving them dates I’ve found, but we generally hit them unless something really unexpected comes up.” Small, flexible and family friendly Meechan Builders pride themselves on delivering what they’ve said they’ll deliver, on time and on budget.
