T T Kim Newth Building on founder’s legacy Supporting residential development in Taranaki is a key focus for Graham Harris Ltd. With over half a century of experience in Taranaki’s civil sector, Graham Harris Ltd has earned its reputation as a trusted partner for roading and civil construction in the region. Company founder, the late Graham ‘Harrie’ Harris, was well-known and well-respected for his knowledge and experience, and in 2000 was awarded Civil Contractors New Zealand Taranaki life membership. His legacy lives on today in the flourishing business that still proudly bears his name. Joe Ingram, who took up ownership of Graham Harris Ltd in 2017, has invested in the business to strengthen and position it for further growth. He leads a skilled and knowledgeable team of 25 staff, delivering a comprehensive range of specialist services, including roading construction, subdivisions, site works, concrete and kerbing, earthworks, demolition and drainage. In 2023, Graham Harris Ltd moved into a new, purpose-built depot with extensive workshop facilities on a Bell Block industrial site on De Havilland Road. “The location is ideal, as we’re in an industrial area surrounded by the kinds of companies and suppliers we work with all the time – everything is accessible and easy to get to,” says Joe, who notes that his civil sector career began with Graham Harris in 2008, starting at the bottom straight from school. When calling up for a job, he was told, ‘If you have steelcapped boots and can back a trailer, you can start Monday.’ He subsequently studied civil engineering at the University of Canterbury before returning to Taranaki and re-joining the company as a project manager. Today, he employs a loyal and well-organised team dedicated to quality workmanship and clear communication. Their collective skills and experience is a real asset for clients. Safety is a key priority on-site, with strict adherence to industry requirements. The company is well-equipped with the right tools for every job, including trucks for haulage. Repairs and maintenance are carried out in-house at their Bell Block workshop. Supporting residential development in Taranaki is a key focus for Graham Harris Ltd. A notable recent project involved delivering civil works to Ōakura’s first residential development in nearly 20 years. Called Te Ara Timata, the upmarket development is located at the end of Cunningham Lane in the coastal village. Graham Harris Ltd worked with land development company, EB, to shape and prepare the 5.4ha site. “It is a high-spec development with some really nice features,” says Joe. “Starting in 2023, this was a two-year project for us. We delivered all the civil construction requirements, including road, drainage, culverts (including a four-metre-wide box culvert through Wairau stream), some large, planted landscaped areas, ponds and walkways.” Graham Harris Ltd is currently working with G.J. Gardner Taranaki on an extension to another new subdivision on Parklands Avenue in Bell Block. The development is in its construction phase, with multiple future stages to come. As a New Plymouth District Council approved contractor, and working in partnership with Downer, Graham Harris Ltd is regularly involved in various local infrastructure upgrade and renewal projects. These can range from footpath and roading improvements to drainage and new concrete and kerbing.
