With a highly mobile staff of 26, plus subcontractors, Eastweld Engineering provides top-quality pipe work fabrication, insulation and installation services nationwide. It’s based in a large industrial workshop in Onekawa for the fabrication work and, along with the skilled engineers, there is a dedicated team of specialist insulators, all under the supervision of founder, SJ Cavell, and his co-owner since 2020, Quinn Ryan. With wide engineering experience behind him, SJ formed Eastweld Engineering in 2014 with a focus on Health & Safety from the start, and he has since established the company as a recognisable industry leader in ASME IX specialty welding, and steam, ammonia and dairy pipe work. For Oceana Gold, Eastweld Engineering is contributing to the fabrication and installation of both carbon and stainless-steel piping systems for three bridge structures associated with the Waihi Bridge access to the mines. Another current project is the fabrication of multiple layers of specialised cassettes for a geothermal baffle system to be installed in an upcoming geothermal project in Taupo, a job in which precision and attention to detail are critical, because the cassettes play a vital role in the overall performance of the system. On the same Taupo project, the specialist insulating team is working on the insulation and cladding of around 2.5km of 250NB pipe work with 37 elbows along its length. This will contribute to improved thermal efficiency, asset protection and the long-term operational reliability of the project. Eastweld Engineering’s staff members represent a wide cross-section of metal and related trades, from welders, pipe and structural engineers to industrial insulators and spray foam injectors – all highly safety-focused. ”We provide ongoing training to our staff so they can perform safely and effectively in high-risk situations,” Eden says. “That training includes, but is not limited to, Confined Space Entry (CSE), Elevated Work Platform (EWP) operation, Working at Heights, LOTO (lock-out tag), Hazard Identification and Risk Assessment, and Site-Specific Safety Requirements. “By embracing change and learning from experience, we strive to create an even safer workplace for everyone involved in our operations,” she says.
