MB Developments NZ directors Murray and Kirsty Brown say steady residential growth in the Manawatū is continuing to support demand for well-designed homes, with the company focused on delivering mid to high-end housing that reflects how modern families want to live. The company has recently completed a new home in one of the town’s growing residential areas, with further sections on the same street already secured for future builds. Murray says Feilding is continuing to attract families drawn by strong employment opportunities across the wider region. “Manawatū has become an important freight and distribution hub and that is bringing a lot of people and families into the area,” he says. “We are seeing ongoing demand for housing, particularly from people who want quality homes that are well designed for family living.” Murray began his building career in 1987 as a 16-year-old apprentice and he and Kirsty established MB Developments NZ following the post-recession downturn in the late 2000s. The couple also previously co-owned and operated Jennian Homes Manawatū for seven years before stepping away in 2023 to focus on higher end residential work. “We decided we wanted to get back to building the type of homes we enjoy most,” Murray says. “We have seen the ups and downs in the market over many years. It has been a challenging period recently, but there are signs of confidence starting to return.” MB Developments operates with a small, experienced construction team and long-standing subcontractor relationships that Kirsty says are essential to delivering consistent quality. “Those relationships are everything. If you look after people they look after you, and that consistency makes a difference to every project.” One of the company’s latest homes has recently been completed and reflects its focus on practical design combined with modern architectural detail. The three-bedroom home was concept designed by Murray before being developed for council consent by New Dimension Architecture. A key design feature is the three metre stud height and a low pitch mono roof, giving the home a clean and contemporary street presence. “These sections are not particularly wide, so that creates design challenges, but we have worked through that by focusing on flow and orientation,” Murray says. Rather than following the standard pavilion layout common in many new subdivisions, MB Developments NZ has positioned living spaces to the northern side of the home to maximise light and usability. “We spend a lot of time refining floor plans,” Kirsty says. “The way people move through a home, where storage sits, how rooms connect, it all matters. We design and build homes we would happily live in ourselves.” The result is a layout that prioritises usable space, natural light, and functional family living, with two living areas, generous bedrooms, plenty of storage, and a strong indoor-outdoor connection with a sweeping north facing deck. MB Developments NZ is now preparing to begin work on two additional sections nearby and wants to offer its design and build services for clients seeking bespoke residential homes across the region. Murray says the smaller scale of MB Developments NZ allows the company to remain closely involved with each stage of a project, from concept through to completion. As a long-standing member of the Registered Master Builders organisation, MB Developments NZ is also able to provide industry recognised guarantees and contract frameworks that support both clients and lenders. “It gives people and their lenders confidence in the process,” Murray says. “We stand behind our work, and we are proud of the reputation we have built over many years.”
