Belmont House in the Bush demonstrates how thoughtful design can transform a challenging hillside site into a private sanctuary, immersed in native bush and birdsong. Designed by Moore Design, the contemporary, three-bedroom home forms part of a three-lot subdivision on a steep 2215sqm site in Lower Hutt. While an existing house was retained on one lot, and another section sold, the new home was carefully positioned to maximise its connection with the surrounding bush while maintaining privacy from neighbouring properties. The brief to senior designer Grant Clarke centred on creating a two-storey home that embraces its natural setting, rather than competing with it. Open-plan living, kitchen and dining areas are complemented by a separate media room, office nook and two distinct outdoor spaces; one for entertaining and another providing a secluded retreat among the trees. Moore Design interior designer/project manager, Hannah Ferens, says the starting point was creating a home that genuinely connects with the bush. “Every important living space was planned around that experience, whether it’s opening on to outdoor areas or framing views into the treetops and surrounding landscape.” The steep site presented both opportunities and challenges. Dropping away into bush on its southern boundary, the section required careful positioning of the house to capture elevated views while preserving privacy from neighbouring homes created through the subdivision. Strategically designed retaining walls allowed the home to sit close to the bush canopy while creating sheltered outdoor living areas. The master suite enjoys views through the trees towards the Remutaka Ranges. “Privacy was just as important as the views,” Hannah says. “By carefully locating the house and shaping the outdoor spaces, we created sheltered areas for everyday living, while still feeling immersed in the surrounding bush.” Material selection reinforces that connection with nature. Charcoal honed masonry block, vertical cedar and standing seam metal cladding have been left in their natural forms, complemented by polished concrete floors, generous 2.7-metre stud heights, thermal double- glazing and underfloor heating. Inside, carefully framed sightlines continue the relationship between architecture and landscape. Views extend directly into the bush from bedrooms, while strategically placed glazing creates layered glimpses through the home, including from the entry walkway and central hallway. “We like materials to be honest and enduring, but equally important is how the home reveals the landscape. Some views are completely open, while others are deliberately framed so the bush becomes something you discover as you move through the house,” says Hannah. Established by Cam Moore in 2011, Moore Design has built its reputation designing residential homes, renovations and extensions, particularly on Wellington’s challenging hillside sites. The practice has adapted through changing economic conditions while retaining an experienced team, including senior architectural designers, Grant Clarke, who has been with the practice for more than a decade, and Clayton Perfect, who has been part of the team for seven years. Today, the seven-person practice operates from Wellington and Mount Maunganui, servicing clients throughout the Wellington region, Kapiti Coast, Hutt Valley, Wairarapa and Bay of Plenty. Alongside bespoke new homes, the team increasingly provides complete interior design schemes that carry the design intent through to the finished living environment.
