They take total care and responsibility for the job because they are really proud of it.” For Cavalier Homes Taranaki, the best advertising doesn’t come from billboards or glossy brochures – it comes from happy clients talking to their friends and family. “We’ve got a really good reputation and most clients come by word of mouth,” says Robert Anderson, director of Cavalier Homes Taranaki along with his wife Donna. “We’ve have many clients who have built multiple times with us.” With more than 30 years in the building trade, Robert says the formula remains simple: quality staff, personal service and homes designed around the people that will live in them, rather than a template pulled off a shelf. The business has been independently owned by the couple since opening in 2005, and they favour employing their own team directly instead of using labour-only builders. “By employing our own staff this gives quality control,” says Robert. “Clients deal directly with one of our site foremen, who takes complete ownership of each build. They take total care and responsibility for the job because they are really proud of it.” Braden Malcolm is one of those foremen, having joined straight from school 22 years ago. Matt Koch, the other foreman, has been with the company around a decade. Both lead teams of tradespeople and apprentices on-site. There is no sales team either. Once again, Robert and Donna prefer to deal with clients directly. Design is also fully tailored. “We have standard plans but we hardly ever use them,” says Robert. “We design to the client’s requirements and site. An in-house designer works alongside each client to bring their project to life within budget. Donna also serves as the company’s colour consultant, guiding clients through fittings, fixtures, and interior and exterior colour schemes.” One of the company’s current builds is on Washer Road, Ōakura, for clients that had admired a previous Cavalier Homes project and later approached Robert and Donna after struggling to find land or an existing home that suited them. Once they had secured a section, the team developed a design to match their budget and lifestyle. Clad in brick and weatherboard, the 430sqm home will include six bedrooms, three and a half bathrooms, two lounges, an office and three-car garaging, along with two al fresco areas and an expansive 240sqm deck. The fully tiled bathrooms and a scullery-equipped kitchen add to its family appeal. Set on an acre with mountain and sea views, the home is due for completion later this year with Cavalier Homes also handling the landscaping. Another current project is a 270sqm home in Inglewood for a woman whose extended family has commissioned multiple houses from the company over the years. Robert says business has been steady for Cavalier Homes Taranaki. Last year, the company completed a fourhouse development, having arranged the subdivision and resource consents for a client. Two existing homes were relocated from the site to make way for four, new, standalone dwellings. One has since been sold, two now rented out and the fourth is the client’s own home demonstrating the wide variety of projects Cavalier Homes Taranaki can undertake across the region.
