14 | New World Green Bay - Legacy Construction REGIONAL DEVELOPMENT Rebuild sees store size double Long serving team member Michelle Druker cuts the ribbon at the re-opening of the Green Bay New World. T T Kelly Deeks Green Bay’s 52-year-old New World has reopened after an 11-month, $8 million rebuild. The rebuild has doubled the size of the store, adding new deli and bakery departments as well as 2000 additional product lines and nine new full time jobs, setting up the locally owned and operated supermarket to service the growing Green Bay population for another 50 plus years. The rebuild has been led by store owner Jamie Brear, who says the old store was outdated and the population it serviced had outgrown its offering. “So we’ve doubled the size of it now and added the deli and the bakery, and also we have air conditioning which we didn’t have before,” he says. “I’ve been reminiscing with the team recently about once when I was trying to be good to the staff by giving them fan heaters so they could keep warm at checkouts. “The trouble was our circuits were so old we actually blew the circuits and we had to close the store for two hours! Now we can put the air conditioning up and down without any worries.” With 2000 additional product lines, upgraded produce and seafood sections, and a service deli offering catering for people on the go and meal options for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, Jamie says customers can now do their full shop at New World Green Bay, which previously was seen as more of a top up shop. 1600 customers now visit the store every day, up from an average of 1200 in the old store. Many are new customers, local to the area who had been travelling to New Lynn or Lynfield to do a full grocery shop. “Now we’re large enough to stock everything our customers need, while still being that relatively small supermarket that’s in touch with our community.” Jamie has owned and operated New World Green Bay since October 2020. He is passionate about the supermarket industry and started his career aged 15, pushing trolleys. He has worked every job in every department on his way to taking ownership of New World Green Bay, which was a dream come true for Jamie. He is now happy to be able to provide the community with a brandnew store that’s been designed, configured, and stocked based on their unique needs. “We want to thank customers for their patience over the past year as we’ve worked hard to rebuild the store, while remaining open for business. It’s a terrific milestone for the Green Bay community, and to celebrate the re-opening, we asked our longest serving team member Michelle Druker, who’s worked in the store for more than 33 years, to cut the ribbon.” Jamie’s major focus now is on making sure his community has a great offering, and helping the youngest generation with jobs and careers. “We hire people locally, and we offer apprenticeships,” he says. “I’ve currently got four young people working here who are ambitious to become store owners. One is doing a butchery apprenticeship, one is doing a bakery apprenticeship, and two are going through their certificate in retail with me. They’ve got some personal drive and passion, and I am passionate about being able to mentor the next generation.” New World Green Bay’s rebuild was completed by Legacy Construction. Two adjacent stores on Godley Road were demolished to make way for the extension, which also went five metres back into the carpark.
