| 15 Coromandel Business Park REGIONAL DEVELOPMENT T T Kim Newth Park a business incubator The Coromandel Business Park has been developed to cater for a diverse range of needs. Coromandel Town’s first ever business park is ideally sited (1040 Tiki Rd) and ready to accommodate local business development needs. This exciting new industrial subdivision is a first for the Coromandel. For owners/ developers Alan James and Tania McNeil, the Coromandel Business Park represents the culmination of many years of planning and it’s a big step forward for the local business community. Alan started his family business, James Drainage, in 1984 but for many years struggled to secure a permanent base of operations due to the lack of industrial zoned land on the peninsula. Even when he acquired his own land to operate from, he says the local council advised he would still need to seek a zoning change to ‘industrial’. With the support and encouragement of neighbours, including Selwyn Bromlund, Larry Knudson and Arthur James (who put up funding), Alan set about doing just that. “All the people who helped with the zoning change were publicly minded,” says Alan. “It wasn’t for their own benefit – the focus has very much been on developing this for future generations.” By 2008, the zoning change had been secured. Consent to develop an industrial subdivision was then applied for in 2012. “We got it passed and have been working on it ever since. Everything is finally in place now – we’re just waiting for titles.” From engineering workshops to fuel and storage depots, the Coromandel Business Park has been developed to cater for a diverse range of business needs. A new tar sealed road has been created – Seabrook Drive – that gives easy access to the sites. All are connected up with power and water, as well as a communal effluent treatment plant. Eight sites are currently available, priced from $425,000 and ranging in size from 750sqm to 1415sqm. “We’re getting lots of enquiries from mechanics, panel beaters and engineers wanting to come in. We’ll probably put up a few buildings to make it easier for them. We’re really looking forward to getting ourselves properly set up there too, having operated out of two shipping containers with a canopy between them for the past 15 years. “We will use our land to store all our diggers, trucks and everything else.” Almost 40 years ago, Alan started James Drainage with just one truck, a tractor/back hoe and one labourer. Today, the family business has a staff of 20 and offers a wide range of drainage, sitework and other services. The company’s fleet includes multiple trucks, diggers, excavators, and various plant and equipment. As well as drain laying and septic tank installation, the team offers septic tank cleaning services, grease trap cleaning, installation of wastewater treatment systems vehicle salvage, an array of siteworks (including retaining walls, earthmoving, concrete and excavation work, metal, sand and soil cartage, demolition services) traffic management and skip bin services. “This summer we’ve had our trucks and diggers out clearing the roads because the wet weather has caused a lot of slips and we’ve been busy organising traffic management. “We have our own consented dump site to take the fill from slips and it’s amazing how much goes into that every year.” Proudly supports Coromandel Business Park EXCAVATORS TIP TRUCKS SKIP BIN HIRE BOBCATS, AUGER & CHAINDIGGER HIRE STMS SERVICES SEPTIC TANK CLEANING 07 866 8308 jamesdrainage@xtra.co.nz ALAN JAMES CERTIFIED DRAINLAYER MOB NO: 021 726 850 1020 TIKI ROAD, COROMANDEL P.O.
