New forest establishment Forest management Harvesting and marketing Environmental protection and monitoring Enduring businesses are forged from the anvil of courage and vision — something that Peter Francis Olsen knew when he founded PF Olsen ifty-two years ago. From a small o ice in Ngongotaha on the western shores of Lake Rotorua, 10 kilometres northwest of Rotorua city, the emerging operation initially focused on forest establishment and silviculture activities. From a background in forestry, Peter saw a need to lift the level of professionalism and knowledge a orded to the non-corporate forest owning network that included, farmers, investors, councils, government departments and iwi. Now employing 135 sta , hundreds of contracting crews and providing employment opportunities for thousands of forestry workers within those crews, the company looks after 160,000 hectares around the country, harvesting three to four million tonnes per year. Regional o ices are based in, Waipapa, Whangarei, Rotorua, Gisborne, Napier, Masterton, Wellington, Whanganui, Nelson, Blenheim, Christchurch, Timaru and Dunedin. Around 40 sta are also based throughout Australia, involved in forest management as well as agricultural management. As a forest management company PF Olsen is involved in all aspects of forestry from land preparation, forest PF Olsen – driven by vision establishment, silviculture, harvesting, log cartage and marketing, project analysis, feasibility analysis, and resource consenting. For the last nine years PF Olsen has enjoyed a successful relationship with the Waipa District Council, managing their plantation forestry estate which is located in Pirongia. “In total, the Council owns about 234 hectares of plantation pine, with a range of age classes and most stands are pruned and thinned,” says Sales and Marketing Director Scott Downs. “Those forests are now being maintained, while they grow in value for the Council.” PF Olsen is currently harvesting a couple of the Council’s older pruned stands. Totalling 40 hectares, the harvest will produce 16,000 tonnes of logs, with the high value clear wood grades sold to local mills like Kiwi Lumber whenever possible. Scott says much of that processed timber will be used for domestic products like premium decking, with some milled boards on-sold to mills in Europe and the USA for further downstream products. “We expect the logging to be completed in about three months and which stage we will commence aerial ground preparation work to control the weeds. Then a local silviculture company will replant the forest in winter 2024 with high genetic stock to maximise the councils return on investment. Environmental and inancial outcomes are very important to both the Council and PF Olsen.” WAIPA DISTRICT COUNCIL PREFERRED CONTRACTOR GENERAL EARTHMOVING SPECIALIST IN WALKWAY CONSTRUCTION & MAINTENANCE CONTRACTING Paul Garland 0274 962 399 tintagel1@xtra.co.nz 2 TON EXCAVATORS • 14 TON EXCAVATORS • 2 X 7 TON ROLLERS • 12 TON BULLDOZER • 2 X 10 TON TRACTORS • MINI - DUMPERS www.fullflowservices.co.nz • Pumps • Backflow Testing & Instillation • Pneumatic Actuators • Mechanical Assistance • Pneumatic Air Supply • Control Valves • Food & Beverage • Welding Services Contact us today for all your Valve Servicing and Airline Installation requirements Full Flow Valve Services, 336 Alexandra Street, Te Awamutu | Contact Craig on 027 385 5356 or craig@fullflowservices.co.nz
