WEL Networks T T to page 36 REGIONAL DEVELOPMENT WEL Networks and Infratec are constructing New Zealand’s first utility scale Battery Energy Storage System (BESS). The 35MW BESS is being built on industrial land on Rotoworo Road Huntly and will connect to WEL’s 33kV network and is expected to be commissioned in the third or fourth quarter of 2023. The BESS site was blessed prior to the start of construction and has been named “Rotohiko” (lake energy) by local Iwi. The BESS comprises of sixteen battery modules, eight inverters and four transformers along with ancillary equipment. Each battery module is the size of a 20ft shipping container and weighs 32 tonnes. Supply chain and logistical challenges have been overcome although they have pushed the delivery timeline back as seen on many infrastructure projects around the country. Working closely with suppliers every step of the way has helped minimise the impact. To enable the connection of a BESS of this size to the network, a large number of electrical studies have to be completed to satisfy the Network and Transpower that the BESS will not create problems in the electricity supply but actually support it. Upon livening the BESS, there is a period of stringent electrical testing to be carried out in order to satisfy stakeholders that actual results line up with the studies, prior to the BESS being commissioned. WEL Networks General Manager Energy Services Kerry Green says playing a key role in the reduction of emissions in the Waikato and supporting New Zealand’s Net Zero goal of becoming 100% renewable by 2030, were among key project drivers. He says WEL Networks purchased Infratec in 2020 to enable the company to further develop sustainable technologies and take on new opportunities in the provision of clean, innovative and affordable electricity to Waikato customers and the rest of New Zealand. Wellington-based Infratec specialises in large solar PV and battery solutions and has a track record of providing innovative energy solutions in the Pacific and New Zealand regions. Infratec supports the sustainable development of renewable generation and distribution systems in New Zealand, the Pacific and ASEAN region to reduce diesel usage and to develop local capability. BREAKING GROUND, MAKING HISTORY – BESS, HUNTLY Connell Contractors is proud to play an integral part of this groundbreaking BESS project in partnership with Infratec. Our team of experienced civil engineers worked tirelessly to ensure the successful construction of the battery site in Huntly. Our expertise in the design and construction of civil works in the power sector played a crucial role in securing this project. We were responsible for the construction and installation of stormwater systems, access and roading to the site, a total of 25 concrete foundation pads, sumps and ducting for all electrical cabling to the site. Our team are working closely with Infratec to ensure that the project is a success. We are delighted with the progress, and it has been a pleasure working alongside Infratec on this exciting venture.
