Gyro Plastics - a recycling leader Gyro Plastics is aiming to reduce waste and its environmental impact through an initiative with WEL Networks that is seeing network pillars recycled that are no longer in service. Since starting in November 2019 hundreds of pillars have been collected – diverted from land ill – recycled and reused as recycled raw material. Gyro Plastics managing director Trudi Duncan says that it was a no-brainer for the company to get involved in the initiative: “Diversion from land ill is our immediate goal. With further uptake from the electricity industry, greater resource use, economic and energy savings will be gained,” she says. As part of WEL’s end of job process, once the pillars are removed from the network, any metal or brass is removed and they are rinsed with water and placed into a cage. Once the cage is full, with about 60 pillars, it’s sent to Gyro Plastics in Fielding. The cage is re illed with WEL’s pillar replacement order before it’s sent back to WEL’s Hamilton premises. Trudi says that once Gyro Plastics receive the pillars they are recycled and repurposed raw materials and components are re-introduced into the manufacturing and assembly process. “Our product designs allow for a variation in plastic properties giving us the ability to use recycled plastic powder interchangeably with virgin plastic. Our recycled plastic powder is used in any manufacturing where an in-ground item would be traditionally manufactured in black virgin plastic,” she explains. Trudi owns Gyro Plastics with father Ross Biggar. The company is one of the leading plastics engineering company in New Zealand. Gyro Plastics made its irst plastic moulded product in 1968 and since then has become known as expert plastic manufacturers, providing the infrastructure sector in New Zealand with a broad range of distribution pillars and cabinets. Since July 2016 it has been operating out of Feilding after having been previously located in Wellington since the company's inception. Services and products are available nationwide and the company is one of the top plastic manufacturers for the main hubs such as Auckland, Hamilton, Wellington and Christchurch and other major towns and cities in New Zealand. Gyro Plastics specialises in rotational moulding, creating products that are lexible, strong and less likely to crack in extreme temperatures. It o ers a range of products and services including electrical products, custommoulding and bespoke design and manufacture. Trudi says that the company’s longevity and expert teammeans it can o er a fast turn around time and can accommodate both short and long runs. It uses well-established suppliers, some of which have been supplying the company for close to 20 years or even longer. “At Gyro Plastics we always have a thorough emphasis on product quality, service to customers and on time delivery.
