| 45 T T Sue Russell Storage sector continues to thrive The new Arthur Porter Drive Safeguard Self-Storage site will have 440 units over two levels. CONTRACTING Safeguard Self-Storage/Livingstone Building - Hamilton Terry King formed Safeguard Self-Storage over four years ago, having come from a ‘storage background’, he could see the opportunity to step out on his own and form a management company, drawing on his experiences and skills. In that space of years Terry has grown to managing 21 Safeguard Self-Storage sites, with four located in Hamilton and a fifth to open soon in the city’s rapidly growing northern quarter on Arthur Porter Drive. Other storage sites are spread through many provincial towns in the North Island, Wellington and six in the South Island as far south as Dunedin. “We’re a management company and we link with investors who want to be involved in self-storage but don’t know how to do it. We run the facilities that others own.” Beginning just before the onslaught of Covid Terry says business began a little slowly, however he believed then and still does that the storage facility sector is in a perfect place to thrive, through recessions and economic growth cycles occur. “Our industry flourishes when there is a lot to move; whether the economy is good or bad, there is always demand for high quality, safe, secure storage facilities.” Placing an emphasis on setting up storage sites really well, employing the right people and latest technologies, has underpinned the businesses growth. “We know that sometimes it can be quite a difficult time when people are shifting personal items into storage, so we’re really fussy about having staff who understand how to support them. It begins with our people, backed up by state-of-the-art systems.” The new facility in Hamilton, is being built by Livingstone Building, who has built several storage sites for the new owner. “Livingstone Building are a reputable construction company with a long history. It was only logical that John would ask them to build this new project,” says Terry. When completed, the Arthur Porter Drive Safeguard Self-Storage site will have 440 units over two levels. No expense has been spaired to ensure the facility provides excellent quality service, security and experiences for those renting storage space. Planning has been in the pipe-line for about 18 months and the new storage complex will have two specialised lifts being imported from Australia. And new projects aren’t stopping with this build either. “This year there will be atl east 30 facilities we manage. It’s a growing sector with a very strong future in terms of investment opportunities.” “We’ve really put a lot of thought into security. Each person has a unique code and every unit is alarmed. When a unit owner enters his or her key, it automatically de-activates just their alarm.” Terry is looking forward to another successful year of growth for his company. “I know the model works very well. Investors want to engage in an industry with a positive future and minimal risk and we’re here to help them operate their storage sites successfully, offering customers a great service at the same time.” “Our industry flourishes when there is a lot to move; whether the economy is good or bad, there is always demand for high quality, safe, secure storage facilities.” James@pactsteel.co.nz www.pactsteel.co.nz Proud to Support Livingstone Building
