78 | T T Rachel Graham Unique build for Waiheke restaurant The award-winning Heke Kitchen on Waiheke Island. Envoy Construction BUILDING Envoy Construction have made a speciality of helping craft unique locations for restaurants, bars and shops across Auckland, so taking on the striking new build of The Heke Kitchen on Waiheke Island was ideally suited to them. The Heke Kitchen is a family, and dog, friendly restaurant sitting within four acres of beautiful gardens on Waiheke Island. Envoy Construction was the main contractor bringing to life Izzard Design’s stunning plans for The Heke Kitchen. The high quality of work delivered by Izzard Design and Envoy Construction has been recognised with the two winning the Food and Beverage award in the Retail Interior Association’s Red Awards for the project. The Retail Interior Association say the awards are a way to promote excellence in retail design around the country, and recognise the contribution of designers, shopfitters and suppliers to the retail industry. There are six group categories covering the likes of Health and Beauty, Big Box and Speciality Retail. The association says for the awards the emphasis is on meeting the needs of the target market and creating a point of difference in the competitive retail sector irrespective of the budget. Zane O’Donnell is one of the directors of Envoy Construction, along with Dave Crosbie, and Zane was the project manager of The Heke Kitchen project. Auckland based Envoy has been operating since 2010 and specialises in complex projects and bespoke fit-outs. Zane O’Donnell says with The Heke Kitchen the clients wanted a welcoming and comfortable fit-out with just the right balance between somewhere casual but also a bit special. “So, you would feel as comfortable in your jandals having a beer with your mates or at the other end of the spectrum feeling great in your Sunday best enjoying a special occasion. The space feels great across the spectrum. Which is hard to achieve, but with a great group effort we got there.” As the main contractor, Envoy Construction project managed everything from the ground up, from civil construction right down to installing the finishing touches and managing all the sub trades in between. All of the carpentry was carried out in-house by Envoy, as Zane says they find this the best way to control the quality of the build. He says it was great for their hard work to be recognised with the Red Award, with The Heke project providing the perfect environment to deliver an award-winning build. “We had the best team, best suppliers, best sub-contractors, best designers and the very best clients,” says Zane. “An award was never part of our motivation, but if the build was not at the very least outstanding with all those factors going for it, then it’s probably time to take a pretty hard look at ourselves.” Zane says Envoy was just a small part of a big machine that made The Heke Kitchen what it is, but it was a real privilege to be part of it. “The real horsepower behind these awards was Izzard Design, without their vision and skill at capturing the clients’ intents, layering those ideas with creativity, tuning that into the final spaces, then none of us would be here. It is a design and build award after all.” He says every staff member who worked on the job also had a significant role in the success of the build. “A hat needs to be raised to all the sub-contractors and consultants that poured a good part of their lives into this project too. “It takes a massive team to deliver these projects from skilled machine operators, plumbers, electricians, drainlayers, tilers, painters, plasterers, fire system installers, audio dudes and every type of engineer you can possibly think of. Let’s not forget about designing the space to begin with. It’s literally a team of hundreds.” The team at Envoy are now looking forward to helping create stage two of the development at The Heke, with the addition of an onsite whiskey distillery and craft brewery coming soon. “We had the best team, best suppliers, best subcontractors, best designers and the very best clients,” Þeldcraft.co.nz enquiries@Þeldcraft.co.nz Design | Make | Manage | Install From concept through to completion, Fieldcraft works with construction companies, architects, interior designers and private clients to Þnd practical solutions to bespoke design challenges on residential and commercial projects.
