Coast NZ Construction T T Kelly Deeks BUILDING Now celebrating 10 years in business, Bay of Plenty’s Coast NZ Construction is enjoying a busy construction period, with many repeat and referred customers, which allowed owners Jimmy and Charlie Dow to keep 13 builders busy through 2024, and look at another lively year ahead. “The only thing we struggle with in this environment is workflow,” Jimmy says. “There is lots of work in the pipeline, but also lots of delays from consenting and consulting.” “Jimmy can hustle the councils and the consultants,” adds Charlie. “He is the middle man getting the job done.” With a shortage of available land in both Papamoa and Mt Maunganui, Coast NZ Construction chooses not to compete with the group housing companies for sections, and instead features heavily in the renovation market, as well as building dream homes for clients taking a big step towards the next stage of their lives. “We really enjoy working with couples who are retiring and building their forever homes, and adding a second lounge or a master bedroom for young families needing a bit more room,” Charlie says. “We’ll also do small jobs like decking and fencing,” Jimmy adds. “We make sure we say yes to most jobs and keep our boys busy.” Jimmy works solely on keeping work in front of his team, and with plenty of repeat customers, one on to their 10th renovation with Coast NZ Construction, the quality of their solutions speaks for itself. “When anyone is enquiring, we get straight around to see them and see what they want, then get their pricing back to them ASAP,” Jimmy says. “Stu, our project manager, runs the jobs and the subbies and the boys on site, and the boys are on site doing the mahi to get the treats.” This work on site is being recognised around town as quick and quality. The Coast NZ Construction team always arrives on time, takes 20 minutes for smoko, and does a solid day’s work. “On the majority of our jobs the labour is under budget. People in the area can see our Coast NZ sign pop up and see us cracking on. By the time the job is finished, the neighbours are like ‘these guys smoked that job’. Then the phone rings and away we go again.” Stu runs a very tight ship, and Jimmy says his team of 10, many of whom have been with Coast NZ Construction for more than five years, actually care about the job they are doing. “That’s a massive secret to success. We can find the clients and create the work, but it’s the team behind us that makes it happen.” Great clients can also help the job run smoothly. “If you’ve got good cheese scones, just watch that job whistle,” Jimmy says. Coast NZ Construction’s use of the Rave Build management system, designed specifically for New Zealand residential builders, keeps everyone on the same page with a high level of open-book communication throughout every stage of each project. Builders, subcontractors, suppliers, and clients are kept abreast of all task notification and allocation, check lists, and variations, and everyone has the ability to easily track build progress. Clients have live access to their budget and it is all open book.
