McMahon Builders “The finish is the icing on the cake, but it starts in the ground, and the whole way along you pay attention to detail.” BUILDING Already a qualified panel beater before entering the building trade, Wayde McMahon knows the attention to detail required for that trade serves him well when he’s building, especially as it is usually highspec, architecturally detailed houses he works on. Having travelled and worked as a builder in both America and the UK, Wayde completed his adult apprenticeship in building in 2007, and then set up McMahon Builders in 2008. He wanted the freedom to run his business the way he wanted to, working his preferred hours with fewer breaks, and building up a name for himself. Given that he’s now running a team of 12, all qualified builders, including three that recently completed their apprenticeships with him, he’s clearly done just that. With his company being based in Warkworth, a lot of Wayde’s early work was in areas like Kaipara, Warkworth and Matakana as it started to develop. “Being local did help, and we mostly ended up in the lifestyle, mid- to high-end houses on lifestyle blocks, typically one-hectare blocks wanting architecturally designed houses,” says Wayde. Well-appointed, with a lot of owner input all the way through the design and the build, often with an interior designer involved, these houses, big or small, end up being well-loved homes, explains Wayde. “It shows that the owner has spent a lot of time getting exactly what they want all the way through to the finishings. To build those houses, stepping out at the end and seeing the end result, is a satisfying feeling. That goes for residential builds of the same calibre, too.” One of the larger houses McMahon Builders constructed was completed a couple of years ago in the Matakana area. The home was designed by BK Design, with the owners having their family and grandchildren and outside living in mind. A big covered area complete with swimming pool, four good-sized bedrooms, three bathrooms and plenty of indoor-outdoor flow was all built to make the most of the north view over Matakana Village and east towards Sandspit. “It was 520sqm on a beautiful lifestyle property of about five acres. It had several different claddings, including corten steel, vertical cedar, Sumner Stone, and oblique cladding, which made it really interesting to build and kept the guys on their toes with all the intersecting areas. “The overall finished product was pretty special,” says Wayde. A smaller home of 110sqm in Matakana, designed by RTA Studios and completed more recently, stands out to Wayde as being equally as nice, although totally different. “When you arrived you would have thought it was more like 200sqm,” he says. “Nice long, skinny building, 25 metres long and four metres wide, really well-designed with two bedrooms and two bathrooms, allply interior, ply floor, Colorsteel and vertical cedar cladding. At one end the roof carried on out, and the deck was half closed in with an outdoor fireplace and seating looking over the Takatu Coast.” In among the residential builds generally in the $1 million to $4 million range, Wayde and his team work on some of Warkworth’s light commercial builds, which can be anything including retail, light commercial, and funeral homes. Regardless of what they are building, Wayde knows he can rely on his team, all locals, all hardworking, and all taking as much pride as he does in their attention to detail. “The finish is the icing on the cake, but it starts in the ground, and the whole way along you pay attention to detail. The painters come through and make our work look good, but it all starts off with correct attention to detail at the start of the job,” says Wayde. It’s a sound recipe for success and it’s resulted in many a happy home and business owner throughout the Rodney region, with many more to come.
