Covering the Western Bay of Plenty District Council and Tauranga City Council regions, Coresteel BOP provides a complete construction package as the designer, engineer, manufacturer and builder of its innovative patented all-steel DonoBeam and Bracketless Portal System. DonoBeam is a tapered steel box beam manufactured by welding two folded halves of steel plate together to form a box, specifically tapered to reduce the steel needed for any design without reducing structural integrity. Coresteel has 25 regional distributors throughout New Zealand, with Simon Eilering being the Bay of Plenty co-owner and managing director. In a market that has plenty of competition Coresteel is strong in innovation and quality and does not aim to be a budget operator, however savings can often be made because of the design of its portal systems and the efficiency of these systems. Another key point of difference is the spans achievable with the DonoBeam portals which can be up to 70 metres, compared to the bracketless portals which can be up to 25 metres in width and which are suitable for the likes of sheds and barns. The Donobeam system has been used in hundreds of buildings throughout New Zealand, including retail, warehouses, aircraft hangars, multi-tenant commercial, workshops, factories, community and commercial storage buildings. Managing director Simon Eilering says having Coresteel BOP involved in the initial feasibility, planning and design process are keys to a successful outcome, while also offering efficiencies and savings in a build. “Our engineers design the foundations, precast walls and the whole steel structure; it’s all in-house which makes the difference,” says Simon. “With the DonoBeam system, for example compared to standard structural steel, it’s way tidier, looks better and there’s less steel in it because of the tapered beams; it’s a fully closed in welded seam beam so you haven’t got ‘I’ beams; it’s faster to erect, there’s no timber packing and its bird resistant.” Due to the prefabricated structure, the entire frame can be assembled safely and quickly on the ground without on-site welding, this equates to less risk and time spent on-site. A recent project completed by Coresteel BOP was a log truck way station built at Port of Tauranga for Qube Ports, a stevedoring, marshalling, warehousing, IT and supply chain company. The 60 x 20 metre building is a good example of a straight-forward project with no internal fit-out. Completed in about six months, it highlights the simplicity and efficiency of constructing with Coresteel systems and processes, as well as how repeat work can be gained due to the success of previous projects. “They are an existing client that we’ve done work for before.” The pace of enquiry and confirmed builds is on an upward trajectory, Simon says. “We just picked up another contract and just started another one at Mount Maunganui; it’s actually looking positive with the commercial projects.”
