REGIONAL DEVELOPMENT Opened in November 2024 by HRNZ CEO Brad Steele, Breckon Farms’ brand-new equine facilities are of a truly premium standard that’s up with the best in the world. Ken and Karen Breckon, whose Ōhaupō farm has long been a beacon of excellence in harness racing, worked with New Vision Architecture, NZ Equine Solutions and Construction Advantage to hone the meticulous design and build of the new complex. Now fully complete and functioning beautifully, it features stabling for 48 horses in two wings – one for colts and one for fillies – with a courtyard between them that houses a modern, new function room with full kitchen and bar facilities. The versatile function space complements the stables, and will be used to host select events in the rural sector. Each wing of the stables includes a feed room, wash bays and tack rooms, along with modern staff facilities. “When we brought our first 23 colts here, it was really quite remarkable as it was so quiet,” says farm manager Nigel Fahy. “Usually, horses will freak out when it’s their first night in a box, but instead they were so calm and laid back. “It’s because they can see across the aisle to their mates and, with all the rubber flooring in and around the boxes, it’s just so soft, safe and quiet for them. “Each box has a window that you can open up and tie back and the horses love putting their heads out and seeing what’s going on, too.
