T T from page 128 Breckon Farms: Construction Advantage “It makes it much easier to have the horses in peak condition when they are so calm and unstressed.” REGIONAL DEVELOPMENT Nigel says another advantage during a hot, dry Waikato summer has been that the stables stay comfortably cool, which has been appreciated by both horses and stable staff. “New Vision Architecture are a local Te Awamutu firm who really ‘got the brief’ and made sure every detail was precisely right. There wasn’t much wiggle room in the time frame, but Construction Advantage hit every target to complete on time and to the quality standard we were demanding, with NZ Equine Solutions then completing the final fit-out and finishing touches. It could not have been done any better – we’re really rapt with how it came together.” The new stables provided the perfect preparation vehicle for Breckon Farms’ Class of 2025 in the lead-up to the NZB Standardbred sale at Karaka in mid-February, with the yearlings presenting very well on their public parade day. “It makes it much easier to have the horses in peak condition when they are so calm and unstressed.” At Karaka, Breckon Farms shared first-equal spot for a sales record. One of their yearlings sold to Auckland’s Stonewall Stud for $360,000 – the highest price recorded in Australasia, (equalled by one other stud). The 200-acre farm has been a nurturing ground for many champions, including multiple Breckon-bred group race winners. (One of them, Bettor Twist, has since come off the race track to become a mother, and it was her first foal that scored top-equal bid at Karaka). Since purchasing their property in 2007, Ken and Karen have poured heart and soul into developing it as a first-class nursery for Standardbred bloodstock. With its wide laneways and beautiful fenced pastures – and now world-class stables too – it’s no wonder the effort is paying dividends in the auction ring and on the race track. Professional services offered by Breckon Farms include foaling, weaning, yearling preparation, broodmare care and agistment facilities. Supported by a well-trained team, the foals get their best start in life. AI breeding services are offered in collaboration with the Waikato Equine Veterinary Centre. Moving forward, Breckon Farms plans to increase the number of Breckon-bred elite yearlings going to the sales. Recently, they purchased unbeaten superstar filly Millwood Nike, now starting her broodmare career. She is already in foal and will be foaling this coming spring. Nigel says the whole industry is moving in a positive direction, particularly following the groundbreaking acquisition of the TAB by Entain from Australia. “There are new announcements in harness racing every couple of months, whether it’s increases in stakes or new races. There’s a lot more positivity in the racing industry – it has been really good. We’re excited to see what comes out of the next 12 months.” Proudly supporting Breckon Farms on the Construction Advantage Project 107a Hautapu road, Cambridge Email: office@cominsplumbing.co.nz Phone: 07 823 7263 Web: www.cominsplumbing.co.nz Plumbing, Drainage & Gasfitting Specialist
