REGIONAL DEVELOPMENT Established 17 years ago by Dick Fisher and his daughter Suzy Fisher, Virgin Concrete quickly grew to become a significant presence in the area, and today operates 19 trucks of various sizes and two concrete plants on its site. Based in Kamo, just north of Whangarei, Virgin Concrete produces certified ‘normal’ and ‘special’ grade concrete, up to and including 50MPa, in accordance with the New Zealand building code. “Virgin has mix designs for standard and decorative concrete that enable layers to achieve a varied and exciting range of exposed aggregate, various colours and ground finishes,” managing director Suzy says. The concrete plant can produce over 200 mixes, with each mix having a specific composition, and with sustainability at the forefront. “We are dedicated to implementing sustainable construction methods, and this dedication extends to the selection of materials used in crafting our concrete mixture,” Suzy says. Virgin Concrete uses EcoSure low-carbon content cement, “a game-changer for the environment”. Produced by Golden Bay in Portland, Whangarei, the cement is designed to meet all Virgin Concrete’s performance needs, while significantly reducing its carbon footprint. In addition to ready mix concrete, Virgin manufactures a range of concrete blocks that can be used for multiple purposes, including retaining walls and feed bins, plus the company can supply polystyrene pods, a variety of spacers and concreting tools. As a supplier of ready mix concrete, Virgin Concrete has many significant projects to its credit. One of the company’s largest single pours was 617 cubic metres – the largest single plant pour in Northland, supplied for the construction of an aluminium joinery business. Virgin Concrete has also supplied concrete for Helena Bay Lodge, the Hundertwasser Art Centre and the new Whangarei District Council civic building. Virgin Concrete supplies concrete on an ongoing basis to Heron Construction for the floating wave attenuators – floating pontoons – at Kennedy Point Marina, Waiheke Island, as well as nationwide. The attenuators are designed to protect the bay and berthed vessels without creating permanent changes to coastal currents, or modifying the seabed. “It is absolutely awesome to be involved in projects like these and to have such a good working relationship with the companies that Virgin Concrete regularly supplies to,” Suzy says. In addition to Virgin Concrete’s focus on quality and sustainability, Suzy says. “Being upfront and telling the truth, including taking responsibility if there is ever a mistake made, has been an important part of the business’s success.” The company is pleased to be associated with these large projects, although its work is split between commercial, rural, and residential. An aspect of Virgin Concrete’s “charm” is that every client and every job matters, regardless of the size, reflecting the company’s family ethos, Suzy says. “Our clients and our staff are part of the Virgin Concrete family.” CONCRETE LAYED BY “GET LAYED BY THE BEST” Ross Bourke Ph: 09 433 8385 | Mob: 027 271 7036 | rockobourke@gmail.com
