Now it’s a state-of-the-art concrete-mixing plant with all the key elements up and running and the rest of the site taking shape around them. Co-owned by a group of local Waikato business owners, the plant was carefully researched before it was imported from Italy, chosen because of its use of modern technology that will enable PRMC to consistently and efficiently deliver ready-mixed concrete, just as their name implies. The plant was put together for PRMC by the New Zealand-based Engineering & Plant Services (EAS), chosen for their significant experience in the supply and installation of these plants. The plant is supplied by SIMEM, and the plant operating system is by Dorner, both large, professionally run, global manufacturing and technology companies. Six different pads link the different components of the plant together, with significant engineering involved in the installation process. The primary difference with this plant compared to many others is the use of wetbatch technology. In a nutshell, the concrete is premixed before entering the concrete bowl, not mixed in the bowl – this provides superior consistency and a quality concrete product. “She seems like a complicated system, but deep down the main difference is that she’s a wet- batch plant, which means all the ingredients are mixed in the mixing unit itself, including the water, so it’ll do a 2.5 cubic metre mix of concrete at a time in 45 seconds. It will be a game changer,” says Benjamin Sinclair, general manager of PRMC Water is an important part of the PRMC story, just as it’s important to any concrete operation. PRMC will have the facility to recycle all of the up to 2000 litres of water it takes to wash out each truck when it comes back to the plant. “We’re a concrete-paved yard and we will be able to recover 50% of all rainwater off the site through gravity to the holding ponds for reuse, and the remainder of the site rainwater catchment area has provision to be pumped to storage for reuse as well,” says Benjamin. “If you can imagine 5000sqm of concrete capturing rainwater, that’s a heck of a lot, so we’ll have trouble using all of our water to be fair with you,” he explains. PRMC has started the business with eight trucks, each capable of holding five cubic metres at a time. With four more trucks on order. with a six-cubic-metre capacity, due mid- to late-2025, the fleet will be more than capable of taking on most jobs, big or small. According to SIMEM, the plant is capable of doing 110 cubic metres an hour, although from Benjamin’s point of view, doing 70 to 75 an hour will keep the team and all of its moving parts working nicely. “You’ve also got to think of the guys laying it at the other end. They can’t put 110 cubic metres of concrete on the ground an hour, but it’s good to know we will likely never be waiting on the plant.” The local market within a 30-kilometre radius is PRMC’s primary focus, although they will go further if the job warrants it, and for loyal customers, which is where another technological feature the PRMC team have incorporated into the delivery system comes in. The Verifi system measures slump (slump being the flowability of the product) continuously, from the moment a load leaves the yard until it arrives at the destination point, and will automatically add water as necessary to maintain the correct slump, ensuring the best concrete is delivered every time to a reliably consistent level. “With the use of the Verifi system we will be able to travel further knowing our product will still be perfect when we arrive,” says Benjamin. As the new industrial park takes shape around them, PRMC are looking forward to being an integral part of Cambridge and the surrounding area’s growth and expansion.
