The G.J. Gardner Health and Safety in Design programme that won it the award uses an approach to refine its risk assessments, so its designers are pointing out potential health and safety implications early in the process. G.J. Gardner Homes (Manukau Major Projects) also won the 2019 Site Safe Best Health & Safety Initiative by a Business of No More Than 50 Staff category at the New Zealand Workplace Health and Safety Awards. The award recognised the company’s unique Mental Health and Wellness Programme when, as part of a WorkSafe SafePlus assessment, it identified work-related stress and fatigue as issues. “Our trades are a vital part of our success, and we recognise that their wellbeing directly impacts the quality of our work,” says Byron. “At G.J. Gardner Homes (Manukau Major Projects) we are committed to ensuring that our trades are not only skilled, but also supported in terms of their mental health. As a member of Mates in Construction we prioritise mental health support across our team, providing resources and a network of assistance for those who need it. “We also host regular ‘Live Well’ talks at our roof shout events, where we bring in an expert to discuss ways to maintain mental wellbeing, resilience and stress management. We take the time to ensure that our trades feel valued and supported, as we believe that a healthy, happy workforce leads to better outcomes for our clients and projects.” Undertaking projects ranging from six to 100 units, G.J. Gardner Homes (Manukau Major Projects) has established itself as a significant player in Auckland’s medium-density housing sector. Byron says due to this solid reputation it has busy current and forward bookings, including working on a large project at Wirihana. “We are the build partner for Avant Group’s Wirihana project in Wiri,” says Byron. “Construction of 47 units in stage 1 is underway and on track for completion in October. Working with the Avant Group’s team is proving to be a highly successful partnership.” The project will deliver a mix of two- and three-bedroom units designed primarily for first-home buyers and investors. Byron says that in an uncertain property market the reputation of G.J. Gardner Homes as New Zealand’s most trusted builder is proving to provide comfort and certainty to developers and purchasers. G.J. Gardner Homes (Manukau Major Projects) is also undertaking a 16-unit development in Papatoetoe for a private developer for construction, and assisting with sales and marketing. It also has another development scheduled to begin in spring. “In terms of forward work this year, it’s a positive but still challenging outlook,” says Byron. “It’s also important to us to stand by our values and work with clients who share those same high values in terms of producing a quality product.” DEVELOPMENT G.J.
