REGIONAL DEVELOPMENT Northland: HILLCON Group: BDO Business Centre HILLCON Group has recently completetd the BDO Business Centre in Whangarei, a four-storey commercial project, delivering much needed A grade commercial space to the city, says HILLCON Group commercial manager John Callaghan. HILLCON Group was part of a syndicate that undertook the project which involved a complete renovation of an iconic local building. Dairy House was built in 1974 and was used at that time as the head office for Northland Cooperative Dairy Company, which is now part of Fonterra. John says that the original concrete building was extremely well constructed and achieved an 82% NBS seismic rating before the project commenced. HILLCON Group stripped the building back to its structure and completely renovated it inside and out. As with any renovation project, John says that some unexpected details were thrown up during the construction but nothing the HILLCON team hadn’t seen before and couldn’t handle. The main unexpected challenge was the border closure between Auckland and Northland, which he says threw significant logistical issues at the project. John says feedback to the renovated building has been extremely positive: BDO accountancy firm is the key tenant with City Fitness Group also taking a significant lease, which will see it open the largest gym in Northland. “People have commented on the quality and look of the building.” It was in 2020 that long standing Northland company Hill Construction rebranded to HILLCON Group, encompassing Coresteel Buildings Northland, Hill Construction and HILLCON Structures.
