| 39 Hinuera Stone - Natural Good Looks Hinuera Natural Stone’s kiln ired ‘Awa’ product is helping to give Arvida’s Aria Bay retirement village in Browns Bay, Auckland, a modern and unique look and will be noticed as soon as people enter the village, says Hinuera Natural Stone sales and marketing manager Chris Cli e. He says that Hinuera Natural Stone products are known and selected for adding value to a property, whether it’s a residential or commercial project. Hinuera stone is a unique, natural volcanic stone, quarried from the hills of Hinuera in the heart of the Waikato region. The stone originates from an eruption from a volcano at Mangakino, 1.23 million years ago, some 50km south of the quarry, which blasted a glowing cloud of iercely-hot, glassy ash across the central North Island. Three distinct layers are evident in the pit face at Hinuera. The top several metres are called ‘Ahi’ (Maori word for ire) and have pieces of compacted pumice within the iner material. This is used as cladding or facing material on buildings and walls. The central stone section, predominantly used for paving and custom-made projects, is called ‘Mana’ and ‘Kaha’ (meaning ‘strong’). This is very hard and is suitable for high tra ic areas. The lowest stratum is called ‘Awa’ (river), for the water and mineral oxide markings that run through the rock. Like ‘Ahi’, this layer is softer than the Kaha and Mana, and is again used for cladding and facing. Hinuera Natural Stone crafts stone into standard and custom sizes for a variety of products that o er distinctive good looks, timeless elegance and exceptional durability. The natural stone colour is grey to cream and when kiln- ired it becomes terracotta/rich golden brown. It is available as ‘split’ stone as well as ‘sawn’ stone. The ‘split’ stone has a distinct character with a rough, uneven surface while ‘sawn’ stone has a smooth surface. Hinuera stone has several bene- its. Because it comprises 60 - 70% silicon glass shards it is very durable. It has a high (.81) non-slip rating as paving making it a great choice for internal and external paving and pool coping, stairwells, and wet rooms. When used as a cladding it has strong insulation properties – warmer in winter and cooler in summer – and reduces outside noise. Hinuera stone is also low maintenance and once installed by a bricklayer, the stone is sealed, which protects it from moisture, keeps it in good condition and increases its longevity. Hinuera Natural Stone is proud to supply a natural New Zealand made product. “Our local supply chain and production timelines are becoming a huge advantage since Covid where overseas, and some New Zealand, product supply has been a big issue,” says Chris. Hinuera Natural Stone deals directly with any party including builders, bricklayers, architects and homeowners. Stone can be cut to standard brick size or cut into almost any shape and size to create an exclusive feature and to suit customers’ individual requirements. Hinuera Natural Stone product range includes standard and custom-made products including cladding, paving, furniture, ire surrounds and much more. Kiln Fired ‘Awa’ cladding
