48 | Arvida Group - Te Puna Waiora LIFESTYLE Walkways open to the public from page 47 Village residents have had a say in the development of Te Puna Waiora as it evolved. Likewise locals have been involved in the project creating connections between residents and the community. For example Te Puna Waiora borders Waiora Stream and Arvida has been working with a local group of volunteers called Friends of Waiora Stream, which has seen Arvida clear a large area of the bank so locals can plant natives. Extensive pathways and walkways in and through the property are open to the public to enjoy. “We call our locations ‘living well communities’, rather than retirement villages because they are designed to encourage and support interaction with the neighbourhoods and people around them as well as supporting residents to keep doing what they love for longer,” explains Mike. Village residents have also, of course, had a real say in the development of Te Puna Waiora as it’s gone along. Mike says the community for over-65s will be one-of-a-kind, because residents are arriving with their skills and passions. Already there’s discussion about concepts like, works shop, a mini-farm with animals and a share boat that lets residents get out on the water. Another idea is a sculpture and art trail that tells the story of Kerikeri. Mike says that by joining the community right at the start, residents are helping to decide the features and facilities that will make Te Puna Waiora unique. To foster a sense of community the clubhouse is already under construction and due for completion late 2023. It will offer a kitchen, bar, TV lounge, library, craft room, games room and social spaces. Outside the clubhouse will be a large deck for barbecues and a green space for outdoor sports and activities. The proposed Living Well Centre with café, swimming pool, gym, fitness classes, health services and much more will further enhance to page 50 this sense of community. Mike says that all Te Puna Waiora residents will enjoy membership to this centre. • Phone 09 827 0697 • 1016C Great South Road, Penrose, Auckland • P.O.
