| 101 Project a `Tetris puzzle’ for architectural team ARCHITECTURE Team Architects HB Architecture T T Kelly Deeks Designing and specifying 64 homes for stage three of Universal Homes’ new northwest Auckland neighbourhood West Hills is the highly experienced TEAM Architects, who under the guidance of director Glen Frost have focused on achieving great results not only for Universal Homes, but also for the people who will call this brand new community home. West Hills is a large new neighbourhood which will eventually include about 1400 homes as it grows into a livable, diverse, and healthy community with a strong sense of community. Designed to meet the needs of increasingly busy professionals, lifestylers, and families, West Hills is positioned for easy access to Westgate’s shopping and public transport options and only 20 minutes to the CBD. Glen says TEAM Architects has had something of a Tetris puzzle to solve in the divvying up of land to make sure each of the 60 homes has sunlight, space, and a sense of privacy as well as community. “Once you’ve solved the Tetris puzzle, you’ve got to make every home look good, feel homely, and be a home for people. We are the author of the solution and we are focused on a good development outcome for our client, and a fantastic living outcome for the people who buy these homes.” TEAM Architects has already designed some homes for West Hills stage one but is designing every home for stage three. The team has repeated the use of long-run roofing and timeless, low-maintenance cladding systems with high quality landscaping and a lot of attention paid to how all 64 homes fit next to one another. There’s colour everywhere that’s been specifically created for the gallery as colour emphasises the art works. The main gallery is Hundertwasser’s original art from well-known art works to small sketches, posters and carpets. I think it’s exceptional,” enthuses Grant. In complete contrast, the Wairau Māori Art Gallery is a contemporary gallery with white walls and timber floors and a focus on the art rather than the space. “It’s a delightful contrast to come out of the energy of the main building and be released into the more contemplative and relaxed feel of the Wairau gallery,” he says. Wairau Maori Art Gallery is designed to promote and enhance Te Ao Māori and is the first unique and dedicated public Māori Art Gallery in Aotearoa New Zealand. The idea of a gallery for Māori art was integral to Hundertwasser’s vision when he originally proposed plans for the building in 1993. The Art Centre itself is a work of art, filled with mosaics and clever uses of recycled materials. Absolute Stainless12 Loygard Road.
