Largely contiguous, the estate encompasses 211,000 hectares, which equates to a very significant 0.7% of New Zealand’s landmass. Hugging the eastern border of Lake Taupo, the estate stretches northeast to Whakatane, touching on Rotorua and out past Mount Tarawera to Kawerau. While the plantation conifer trees are owned by Kaingaroa Timberlands, the vast majority of the massive landmass is leased from Māori entities. The forest is managed by Timberlands, which has responsibility for its long term viability, forest health and all forest management practices. Like many industries, sustainability has become a key measure of success for the forestry industry, and perhaps even more so given recent events resulting from Cyclone Gabrielle and its consequences. Heading Timberlands’ focus on sustainability is Colin Maunder, who says given the sheer size of the Kaingaroa forest estate and its iwi ownership, Timberlands carries the mantle of responsibility with a very serious heart. He says there are a plethora of reasons why it is important for Timberlands, and other forest management companies, to employ responsible forest management practices as part of its natural ethos.
