96 | ARCHITECTURE Studio Brick Architects T T Kim Newth A Beachside home for all seasons Stretching across a sandy site between street and dunes at Papamoa is a large family home that celebrates the beach environment with a warm and open embrace. Designed by Studio Brick Architects Ltd, it has been shortlisted in the 2023 Waikato and Bay of Plenty Architecture Awards. Architect Jeremy Brick, working with his friends Belinda and Ben Graham as clients, began with a loose brief before evolving the final standout design. “Ben and Belinda very much put their trust in me as an architect to see what I could come up with; they loved it and from then on, it was full steam ahead.” Getting the street-side elevation right was a key design consideration for Jeremy. With both a large boatshed and a double car garage part of the plan, the challenge was how to design two big garage doors plus pedestrian entry to create an aesthetically pleasing streetfront presentation. This was achieved using contrasting materials of black aluminium and cedar, with the cedar lined pedestrian entry cleverly recessed to break up the façade and deliver a warm welcome. Grounding the exterior design are plastered lightweight concrete panel walls on the lower level, complemented by Nu-Wall aluminium on the top level. “Vertical aluminum was selected as it can withstand the conditions without needing to be repainted or re-stained.” The American oak hallway through the home’s interior has concealed doors to the boatshed and Ben’s adjacent hunting and fishing den. At the far end is the home’s chic minimalist kitchen with butler’s pantry and adjacent dining and living, all flowing to the beachy outdoors and raised deck on the north side. Over-sliders make it easy to throw this space open to the dunes and sea views all the way to Motiti Island. In front of the deck is an above-ground infinity pool, fenced with a shallow moat. Inviting in itself, the pool also provides subtle separation between private land and public beach. “Everything is just a few steps away from the kitchen at the heart of the home. “The front deck and pool are right there and off the living area is a sheltered western courtyard that opens up down the hall too and essentially becomes another room. “It has a full outdoor kitchen, barbecue and open fire with screens on the side and a louvre roof so it can be completely closed off on windier, cooler days. “The pool was very much a team effort that started with landscape designer Alan Mestrom [RM Landscape]. He did the original concept and I took it through consents.” Completing the downstairs layout is a media room, wine cellar, laundry, guest bedroom and bathroom. A skylight above the elegant floating timber stair in the middle of the house ensures the central space is vibrantly light. Upstairs is the main bedroom with ensuite and deck with private spa pool, next to a home gym and office. At the other end is the kids’ zone of rumpus room, bedrooms and bathroom. The unique challenges of living by the coast in a warming world have been fully acknowledged. Securely anchored with deep, pile-driven timber poles, the home’s design also makes provision for managed retreat in future. Papamoa-based PRD Construction delivered all the complex design detail with flying colours. “I’m particularly proud of all our cedar work,” says PRD’s Paul Dent. “There is a lot of craftmanship involved to make sure everything matches and lines up. The Nu-Wall cladding took a lot of time and effort too. It was great to work with a really meticulous owner and Jeremy was amazing - his plans would have to be the best I’ve worked with.” Studio Brick Architects specialises in residential and light commercial architecture.
