Established around 36 years ago, Waikato Steel Fabricators has proven to be one of the region’s leading structural steel fabricators. Its position strengthened when the company combined forces with Auckland-based D&H Steel Construction in 2015 through a strategic partnership. This partnership allows shared resources across both companies and has since led to the successful completion of multiple projects in the Waikato and Auckland regions. One example is a significant new distribution centre in Hamilton, comprising three structures covering around 6700sqm and incorporating around 325 tonnes of structural steel. D&H Steel secured the project, with Waikato Steel Fabricators (WSF) brought in to support its delivery. Waikato Steel Fabricators’ commercial manager, Tertius Terblanche, says the company’s in-house detailing team completed the shop drawings for the entire development before the project was divided into fabrication phases. “It was a joint venture between D&H Steel and Waikato Steel Fabricators, which is something that we’re really promoting,” Tertius says. D&H fabricated a custom-welded beam warehouse and other sections totalling 208 tonnes of structural steel. Waikato Steel Fabricators fabricated the smaller warehouse and drive-through canopy, accounting for the remaining 117 tonnes, while site installation was also shared. “Because it’s in our backyard and we’re sister companies, we worked out that it would be a good idea for us to support them. It shows the horsepower we have in our region as well as nationally,” Tertius says. “It’s assuring to the project team to know that we can strategically draw on the combined capability of both companies, while supporting local.” The project also reflects the increasingly digital nature of structural steel delivery supporting compressed construction timelines. Waikato Steel Fabricators uses BIM (building information modelling) and material traceability systems, barcode scanning from workshop to site, and in-house 3D laser scanning. With the use of BIM, Waikato Steel Fabricators draws on the experience of the whole team to proactively iron out potential challenges before they become reality. It supports overall project planning and execution with high accuracy, while feeding into systems that allow material used in the project to be traced. “In my role with project management, quantity surveying and estimating, there are lots of little tools we’re using that we didn’t have 10 years ago. They’re making our lives easier and more accurate and providing better service to our clients,” says Tertius. Sustainability is another consideration in the company’s work. Waikato Steel Fabricators holds Sustainable Steel Council Gold certification and Steel Fabrication Certification (SFC) accreditation, while the wider industry is promoting steel’s ability to return to the circular economy at the end of a structure’s life. “Structural steel is a unique building material that’s got a 100% circular lifespan because it’s infinitely recyclable. It can be reused, remoulded and go back into the circular economy.” Employing 21 staff, Waikato Steel Fabricators offers careers spanning fabrication, welding and site rigging through to 3D detailing, estimating, quantity surveying, quality assurance and project management. Apprenticeships provide an entry point for both young people and adults. Those entering the trade can specialise in fabrication, welding or site rigging before progressing into roles such as workshop management, detailing management, estimating or project management.
