Rather than pricing individual elements, such as drainage, concrete or landscaping, the company offers complete site-works packages that simplify delivery for clients and main contractors alike. “At the core, it’s having the skillset to deliver the works,” says Cole. “We’ve got really high staff retention; I think our average is around nine years. We try to look after our staff as best we can and that creates continuity across their skillset, and they take a lot of pride in their work.” Among the company’s current work is the Tira Ora Child Health Centre at Whangārei Hospital, where Robinson Asphalts is delivering the external works as a subcontractor to Hawkins. The technically demanding commission draws together many of the business’s services. “It’s been a challenging project with everything that’s been going on in the market, but also because of the technical scope. It covers the full range of what we do, right from bulk earthworks and retaining walls through to decorative concrete, landscaping, planting and building a playground,” says Cole. Having often been a subcontractor to other civil contractors, in 2024 the company invested in its first paver, a CAT AP330, which has helped capitalise on external and internal opportunities and efficiencies. “It made commercial sense for us to buy one ourselves to look after our own work. As a result, we’ve ended up doing way more surfacing for other contractors as well, which has been great.” Grounded in three generations of family ownership, Robinson Asphalts also invests in the communities where its people live and work, through local sponsorships, community projects, and support for organisations that matter to its staff. “All of our staff are local and many have long-standing roots in the community,” says Cole. “We support the organisations and events that are important to them, whether that’s schools, sports or community projects. “That’s something that’s always been important to us.”
