Four decades on, the company has grown from a small local contractor into one of the region’s most trusted names in construction, with a team of more than 180 people and a portfolio that spans education, healthcare, retirement living and commercial development across greater Auckland. As the company celebrates its 40th anniversary in 2026, managing director at Aspec Construction Matthew Donaghy says it does so with a string of landmark projects to its name, several current builds nominated at prestigious industry awards and a culture that has kept talented people coming back and staying for the long term. Matthew says the restoration and transformation of the iconic building stands as a testament to Aspec’s capability in delivering complex, high-profile commercial work marrying the demands of a heritage structure with the expectations of a modern institution. Also nominated at the Property Industry Awards is the Oceania Franklin Amenities Building, while the Diocesan School for Girls’ Chapel of Our Glorified Lord and St Barnabas Seismic Upgrade has earned a nomination at the Architecture Awards. “Three nominations across two major award programmes in a single year reflect the consistency and calibre of work Aspec delivers across its diverse portfolio,” says director and construction manager at Aspec, Jeff Robertson. “These are exactly the kinds of projects that define what the company has become over 40 years.” Other recently completed projects include Kings College’s Performing Arts Centre, AUT’s WQ Building Level 4 Wellness Centre fitout, Highbrook Crossing (Goodman Property), Remuera Rail Station, Waterford Apartments, and works at Saint Kentigern Boys and Girls School and Holy Cross School for the Catholic Archdiocese of Auckland. Ongoing projects include Metlifecare Parkside Village, Kings School’s JR Fletcher Memorial building, the Saint Kentigern College Wingate Building, and Kidz First at Middlemore Hospital, a pipeline that underscores the company’s strength across the education, retirement, healthcare and commercial sectors.
