This is the next stage in our journey,” says director of MAP Projects Mark Prater. Four staff members are now permanently based in the north: Baydon Chappell, Operations Manager Northland; Talia Chappell, Systems Manager; Sonny Petersen, Site Manager; and Theresa King, Management Accountant. The office compliments MAP Project’s presence in Rotorua. MAP Projects offers a broad range of civil engineering services including hydro schemes, dams and generation, water and wastewater, building and structures, roading and infrastructure, piling and retaining, flood mitigation, earthworks, bridges, tunnel repairs and maintenance. Backed by a substantial fleet of company-owned plant and equipment, MAP has the capability and resources to deliver projects safely, efficiently, and on schedule. It places a strong focus on quality, planning and safety to ensure the best outcome for each project it undertakes. A good example is the $30 million Otawere Reservoir project in Waimate North, where MAP led a consortium working alongside Progressive Earthmoving Ltd to deliver the project for Te Tai Tokerau Water Trust. Built next to tributaries of the Waitangi River, the scheme comprises a main dam and saddle dam forming a 50-hectare reservoir with a storage capacity of approximately four million cubic metres. Mark says early contractor involvement played a critical role in optimising the design and improving constructability, enabling the team to deliver the technically complex scheme within a two-year programme. Construction involved around 1.2 million cubic metres of earthworks, extensive foundation treatment and engineered drainage systems across both dams. The project also included a 100-metre reinforced concrete outlet structure and a 110-metre wide concrete spillway, built in highly variable geotechnical conditions. The reservoir is now filling and is expected to take several years to reach full capacity given its scale and contributing catchment. The Northland growth of MAP Projects follows a strong showing at the 2025 Civil Contractors New Zealand awards where Baydon and Talia were recognised for their delivery of the Brenwe Hydro Project in Vanuatu, winner in the $5–20 million category. Baydon was also highly commended in the Z Energy Personal Improvement Award, having progressed from labourer to project manager over 15 years with the company. Work began in mid-May and the project is earmarked for completion by August, a tight timeframe that has proved one of the main challenges. The scope of work includes a main pump station on the dam wall to extract water with further pump stations along the line to carry it to end users including Ōhaeawai village. Ashley Hampton, who co-owns Bay Irrigation alongside Paul Singer and David Crawford, says a key engineering decision involved how best to extract water from a shallow dam with a long wall. Bay Irrigation's solution was to install submersible pumps in the bottom of the dam, pumping up to boost pumps at the surface. “Doing that meant we can keep the required kilowatts for the pumps down compared to just putting pumps in the dam itself,” he explains. “That saved the Trust in pumping costs but also in the size of motors required and the electrical cables needed to go to the pump in the dam.” The company has also installed screens in the bottom of the dam ahead of pump installation. Bay Irrigation was involved in the design of the screens, deliberately oversizing them to allow future lexibility around pump selection, staging and end-user water demand. Bay Irrigation's in-house design capabilities, including CAD work, have allowed it to respond swiftly to changing requirements throughout the project. Ashley says Bay Irrigation is on track to meet targets. This project follows Bay Irrigation's successful delivery of pump infrastructure for the Trust's Te Waihekeora Reservoir on the Pouto Peninsula and the Matawii Reservoir near Kaikohe. For Ashley, the North Waimate project is a further demonstration of what the company can o er at scale. “The projects we have done for the Trust show we can successfully deliver large-scale projects. We keep delivering on quality, exceeding their expectations and meeting their requirements. By getting smaller contractors involved, the Trust got the quality of using a Tier 1 contractor without the price tag.” A New Zealand owned and operated company with more than 30 years in the industry Bay Irrigation's origins date back to the late 1980s.
