T T Kim Newth Ohinewai Developments: Childcare Centre North of Huntly, the small rural town of Ohinewai is proving increasingly attractive for families looking for a quality lifestyle in a central location between Hamilton and Auckland. The town already has a primary school, and now a new childcare centre is being built for the growing community. Ohinewai Developments, led by local steel engineer Nathan Sunde, and his family, is proud to be bringing this new facility to the people of the area. Born and raised in North Waikato, Nathan is also the managing director of Ohinewai Steel, and chair of the Ohinewai Area Committee. The structural steel supplier is one of several industrial businesses in the town, which is also home to The Comfort Group’s Sleepyhead Estate and a large new foam manufacturing plant. The vision for Ohinewai Developments started when Nathan saw the potential in a local block of land for sale, and decided to buy it and develop it to further enhance the area. “We figured out that what the local community really required and needed was a childcare centre, so that’s what we decided to build,” says Nathan. “We realised it would be a great complement for this small town, especially with the new development growth coming up here. More importantly, my three-and-a-half-yearold daughter said to me, ‘Daddy, are you building a day care for Dallas?’ – he’s our 10-month- old son.” This new centre is very much rooted in its community. It will be run by Stephanie Griffin, who already has a childcare centre in Te Kauwhata, called Suits & Gumboots Country Daycare, which is currently at full capacity. “Her dream has always been to move to a new facility one day, and by teaming up with us, she’s going to achieve that objective while also enabling us to grow our commercial portfolio.” Suits & Gumboots’ caring philosophy will be rolled out at Ohinewai’s new centre when the doors open in January 2027. Catering to 0-5 year olds, it will care for up to 100 children. There will be room for them to roam and play the old-fashioned way, and opportunities to create, learn life skills and connect with nature. Designed by award-winning Edwards White Architecture, the new centre will make the most of its reserve views. Families entering the day care will be able to see all the way through the building and rear fencing to century-old oak trees. “We didn’t want the little kids to be surrounded by high fences and block walls – instead, it’s going to be a beautiful country outlook,” says Nathan. ] Another key feature that I’m quite excited about is an outdoor fireplace that’ll be lovely for the kids on those cold, foggy winter mornings.” Exposed steel trusses were created to align with the rear fence and a feature archway, and a chic pastel colour scheme has been selected for the interior. Nathan says a lot of people that grew up in North Waikato are moving back to the area while holding down jobs in Hamilton or Auckland. Many are counting down the days to when the new centre opens.
