T T Kelly Deeks A tightening Auckland housing market and continued demand for high quality, architecturally considered homes is driving steady work for boutique builders like Parris Builds, which is carving out a growing presence across the North Shore, North West Auckland, West Auckland, and Rodney, with a focus on custom homes, renovations and extensions. Founded in 2024 by Matt Parris and his wife Carlie, the family business has quickly established itself in the residential construction space, delivering bespoke projects that prioritise craftsmanship, clear communication, and long-term durability. Matt says Parris Builds emerged following the end of a previous building partnership, giving him the opportunity to reset and refocus on running his own contracting operation with Carlie, bringing structure and systems into the business from day one. Having already spent several years in commercial construction and earlier work as a gib fixer, Matt says the transition into residential building came through hands-on experience rather than a planned career path, but it quickly became a trade he is strongly committed to. “I never set out to become a builder originally, but once I got into it, I really loved it,” he says. “I take a lot of pride in my work and building is something where you can really achieve a lot, and be proud of the things you make.” That attention to detail now underpins Parris Builds’ operating model, with the company positioning itself in the higher end of the residential market, where design detail, material selection, and workmanship standards play a central role. Matt says much of the company’s current workload is coming from repeat clients and referrals. He says each project is treated as a bespoke build, with a focus on clean design outcomes and practical performance. Parris Builds currently operates with a tightly structured team made up of a leading hand builder, a qualified tradesperson, and two apprentices at different stages of training. Matt says building the right team culture has been one of the most important parts of the business so far. “It takes time to get the right people together, but once you have it, everything becomes more efficient and the quality lifts across the board,” he says. “Having the right team also means we are working well together so we’ve got an all-round good attitude, and the team are representing Parris Builds well on-site.” Established 40 years ago by Bob Wheeler, Glencoe Construction is now in the safe hands of Danny Parker, who worked alongside Bob for 10 years and did his apprenticeship under him. Given that Bob Wheeler has also been a judge for Master Builders House of the Year for several years it’s not surprising that Danny considers himself lucky to have learnt his trade under him. It’s now three years since Danny welcomed the opportunity to continue Glencoe Construction’s tradition of constructing beautiful, functional homes throughout the Rotorua district. Danny keeps his team small, which means he can give his full focus to whatever the current job is, running one large project at a time, generally from six months to a year or more. “I’m the guy who does the pricing; I’m the guy you talk to every day and I’m the guy running the job, - so there’s one point of contact rather than having a construction manager working with sub-contracted builders and tradies coming over from two cities away. “People like that it’s more personal and so do I,” says Danny. Carpenter Ben Atkinson and nearly-qualified apprentice Taylor Forrest were both trained by Danny with the same high standards he learned from Bob and continues to set for himself. The calibre of their work speaks for itself and for the last two years Taylor has won the Regional New Zealand Certified Builder Apprentice of the Year Award. Over the years Danny has built and overseen many projects including bespoke high-end residential projects and apartments and a recreation centre at the Arvida-owned Glenbrae Retirement Community in Rotorua. Glencoe Construction remains, nevertheless, primarily a local, residential building company with a focus on high-end homes. Recently they’ve been doing major alterations and additions, which Danny puts down to the state of the econom “With residential work you get to know people really well and you get the feel of what they want. You get a real kick at the end of it when they get to move into their new home and they love it. It’s not all about making money, we just love building,” says Danny.
