Theywere later working as Project Managers when they decided to set up their own business, Stratus Electrical Ltd. Five years later it’s their solid relationship that underpins the company that has steadily grown for the last ive years. While they were both back on the tools in the early days, their complementary skills and roles havematured alongwith the company, so that Paul nowdoes all the estimates and pricing for jobs while Nick is Operations Manager running the day-to-day on the job business of commercial electrical installation. Stratus Electrical has gone fromstrength to strength, doubling its size every year for the last ive years tomatch thework coming in. They have built a strong team including three apprentices, and they’re looking to employ additional sta in the next few months. What began as a steady streamof successful tenders through the Building Tender Services has resulted in a loyal and expanding customer base. “We’ve built relationships with quite a few construction companies and every one of the companies we did jobs for coming back to us wanting us to domorework,” says Paul. Stratus provide a range of services including commercial electrical, residential electrical, project management and quality assurance, design build, UPS installation, solar panel installations and electric vehicle charging. They can provide a one-stop-shop Firmmeets growing demand for construction companies providing all of their electrical needs, taking pride in delivering high-qualityworkmanship and getting jobs done e iciently, on time and within budget. Once the job’s done they provide accurate as-built drawings, maintenancemanuals and client instruction detailing howeach component operates. Recently they’vemoved into the electrical mechanical nichewith e specialized contractors installing refrigeration and/or air conditioning for projects big and small. Their contract for theWesley Primary School newbuild brought them into the solar power space as they installed enough solar panels on the roof to supplymost of the building’s power requirements. “I think it’s a sign of things to come. Especiallywith themove to electric vehicles there’ll be a need for additional electricity generation andmore andmore projects will end up having solar panels on the roof.” says Paul. They’ve joined SEANZ (Sustainable Electricity Association NewZealand), a self-regulatory body for solar installers who assess andmonitor the quality of thework done, andwhile it’s not mandatory Paul thinks customers will increasingly look for recognised SEANZ installers towork on their projects. It’s typical of Stratus Electrical’s professional approach. With their combined 50 years plus in the business behind them, Paul andNickmake it their business to stay across developments in the industry so they can provide their customers with themost e icient, up-to-date options installedwith the reliable professionalism that is their trademark. Integrated into the school is their mara hupara, or what Principal Reddy describes as a garden designed for play, and through play to teach the schools pepeha, their history. “Harko Brown helped us design this Mãori playground with its small awa, and maunga (mountain), and he’s been working with us on how to use tākaro, (play), as a teaching tool. “It’s a mixture of art, movement, play; it’s so much fun and we have a playground that reflects that kaupapa, those ideas that date back hundreds of years.” Sustainability features large in the rebuild with solar panels installed on the roofs of the school and a reticulated system set up to collect the rainwater which can then be used to flush toilets and water the gardens. “It’s a statement to our community that we practice what we preach when it comes to kaitiakitanga-sustainability, and being conscious of climate change, and actually teaching our kids something about the science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics behind it all,” he says. While Stage One of the Wesley Primary School new build has 180 children enrolled, it’s built with the large residential development in Mt. Roskill in mind, and can cater for 300 pupils in 2023. Two years on and with two stages to go Lou Reddy wants to acknowledge the Board Chair, Sione Tupou, along with Brenda Martin, students, community and all of the staff for bringing the project home and putting up with the construction noise. “Because without them, and all the kids, and all the parents who gave feedback, our new building would be meaningless. They give us purpose to what we do and why”.
