| 15 REGIONAL DEVELOPMENT Rotorua Business Awards: Index Engineering Kelly Deeks Hiring the best part of being the best Simply the best: Index Engineering staff celebrate being named Rotorua’s Employer of the Year at the Rotorua Business Awards. With its strength lying in its team of highly qualified and professional engineers and designers, Index Engineering has been named Rotorua’s Employer of the Year at the Tompkins Wake 2022 Rotorua Business Awards. Index Engineering is a Rotorua-grown business, set up by Jan and Ingrid Snyman in 2010 to address a gap in the design verification sector, and to provide mechanical engineering services with a focus on quality. Providing engineering support to customers who need mechanical design solutions to industrial problems, the Index Engineering team works closely with clients who have significant investment in machinery and plant equipment, such as those within the pulp and paper, forestry, oil and gas, renewable energy, and food processing industries, working with customers from Kaitaia in the north to Antarctica in the south, as well as some overseas clients. Index Engineering develops its staff to be the best in the field, and has eight engineers including four chartered professional engineers/design verifiers, and three designers/ CAD draftspersons. Index Engineering is driven by four core values, open communication, quality, can-do attitude, and leaving the world a better place. “One of the most important factors in the success of a design is to truly listen to and understand a client’s needs,” Jan says. “With proper planning and open communication, we can deliver on-budget and on-time results for our clients.” Quality is paramount in all Index Engineering does. “Our clients can rely on the fact that we have an ISO registered quality system in place for all our design verification work, and rigorous internal systems in place for the checking of work prior to going out to our clients. In addition, we put emphasis on hiring the best people, continuing professional development, and the use of the latest engineering software to achieve quality outcomes.” Index Engineering employs its can-do attitude as it works with clients to identify, define, and deliver niche solutions to complex problems. “The ability to deal resourcefully and creatively with unusual problems and difficult situations is a key value in our business. Our solutions are practical, and our engineers are not afraid to get their hands dirty.” Index Engineering creates designs that make efficient use of renewable resources “In addition, we put emphasis on hiring the best people, continuing professional development, and the use of the latest engineering software to achieve quality outcomes.” and increase the safety of plant equipment. The company is also a proud member of the Pledge 1% movement, and is committed to making a positive difference to the environment and the local community through donating 1% of consulting fees to charity. “We feel really honoured to have been named Employer of the Year,” Jan says. “At Index Engineering, people are at the heart of what we do, and we are thrilled we have been able to attract and retain exceptional people. We are super proud of our amazing team.” Ingrid adds being a good employer is more important than ever in today’s social and economic climate. “We continually look at our approach to see how we can create a workplace where people feel valued, and we place a lot of emphasis on mentoring, knowledge sharing, and transparent communication,” she says. Both Ingrid and Jan commend the Rotorua Business Chamber for running a great awards programme, and says the Tompkins Wake Rotorua Business Awards on November 5 was an awesome night of celebration. “It was great to see so many of our local businesses recognised.” Proud to be associated with Index Engineering
