20 | NPM Construction: Bream Bay College Labour an issue in hot market A single storey square building with two mono-pitch roofs, the design includes clerestory windows and a significant three metre veranda around the circumference. from page 18 REGIONAL DEVELOPMENT “While our subcontractors procured materials as early as they could, international shipping did cause some challenges, which we have now got through. “The other issue was labour. In this very hot market, it is difficult to procure the right level of labour, and this project required some very high-level skills. “Being able to utilise our own significant internal resource is a key advantage for these kinds of complex projects. “We have over fifty people working for NPM, and across the entire Bowling Infrastructure Group there are more than one hundred and eighty employees. “The project is now at the stage where the buildings are being closed in, and beginning internal linings.” The design utilised 8500 lineal metres of Laminated Veneer Lumber (LVL) structural timber, all locally sourced from Futurebuild in Ruakaka. “There’s a big push in the industry at the moment to minimise the environmental impact associated with construction projects, looking at things such as waste minimisation and even the materials chosen for the project at design stage. “The selection of LVL in this project was one of the considerations on this project due to the high amount of embodied carbon in timber versus other elements such as structural steel. “The LVL superstructure had to be fully modelled in 3D and that meant every member could be pre-cut on the ground. The largest members are 450mm x 90mm and some are upwards of 10.3 plus metres long. “With a superstructure with lots of moving parts you only have a tolerance of +/- 1 or 2mm to deal with and having to cut that on the ground means you need clear and understandable shop drawings to allow premanufacture of components prior to the erection of the structure.” Reflecting on what NPM Construction brings to its projects, Damian says the biggest thing is collaboration and a solutions focus. “We have significant internal resources and skills base available to us through the Bowling Infrastructure Group. Because there are so many companies within the group with so many different facets we have a massive cross section of skills. “We have people who have been working for us for more than twenty-five years and been in the industry for more than thirty-five years. They bring a huge amount of skill to the group. Transparency and honesty is also a key factor. “Look, we’re Northland based so it’s pretty usual for Northlanders to get together and have a very straight forward conversation. “It’s also about managing relationships. We’ve completed over eighty projects for the Ministry of Education during a relationship spanning more than ten years. “Like all our projects it has been a group effort with everyone pulling in the same direction.” Absolute Stainless12 Loygard Road.
