REGIONAL DEVELOPMENT to page 24 Conveniently positioned in Highgate Business Park, the new Mitre 10 MEGA currently under construction is well located in Silverdale, one of Auckland’s fastest growing suburbs. Mitre 10 New Zealand’s Chief Property and Legal Officer Grant Fraser says the business has wanted to get into Silverdale for some time and saw the new Highgate development well placed to serve the significant growth that has been happening right across the region. “We continually look for new store opportunities and are particularly influenced where we see housing and population growth, making sure we can serve those customers in those new communities. “If you look across the motorway to Milldale, there’s a major new development going in there, with significant other housing going on all through that area, right up to Orewa. In the next couple of years there’s intended to be an overpass that will directly connect the Milldale development to Highgate.” Mitre 10 (New Zealand) Ltd bought the land about four years ago, and after going through the consent process, engaged Auckland Civil to commence earthworks on the 2.3-hectare site just under a year ago. Following a rigorous tender process to identify the preferred lead contractor for vertical construction, Auckland based Gibson O’Connor was selected. “Gibson O’Connor came through very strongly as being able to offer a cost-effective solution,” says Grant. “They also have a very good track record of delivering on time and to a high quality. We have now competed the building platform, and the structural steel is being erected, which we hope to have largely completed by Christmas. The concrete floor will be poured February next year, and we’re targeting an official opening in July.” While Mitre 10 (New Zealand) owns the land and buildings at Silverdale, as a cooperative business model the local operation is owned by independent owner/occupiers. “We really pride ourselves that co-operative members are part of their community. Mitre 10 New Zealand is a very successful business and in a large part that’s due to our really great members. “In this case, the Caithness family, operating as the Riviera Hardware Holdings, will be the owner/operators in the Silverdale store. Riviera Hardware already own a number of Mitre 10 stores across the Auckland region and bring considerable experience to Silverdale.” Mitre 10 MEGA Silverdale will include the main retail offering along with garden centre and Columbus Café, as well as a building-materials trade offer with substantial customer drive-through. “Across the footprint, the retail area is just under 6000 sqm and then the garden centre and drive through are about 2000 sqm each. In addition to that you have inwards goods, yards and substantial customer carparking. “We continually look for new store opportunities and are particularly influenced where we see housing and population growth, making sure we can serve those customers in those new communities.” It will definitely be a prominent store in the area.” With the aim of achieving a five-star green building rating, a number of sustainability features will be incorporated within the building, including harvesting rain water off the roof for use in the garden centre. Solar panels positioned on the roof will assist in delivering energy efficiencies, and EV chargers will support the growing number of electric vehicles.
