32 | Pact Steel: Peake Road Industrial development REGIONAL DEVELOPMENT Kim Newth Strong growth for Waikato steel specialist Located on Peake Road, the development’s warehouse units range in size from 100sqm to 180sqm and are finished with smart colour steel cladding and front roller doors. Founded three years ago, Hamilton’s Pact Steel is a fast-growing company providing structural steel solutions for commercial, industrial and residential projects. Led by company founders Aaron Burkhart and Morgan Corkill, the skilled team provides full service structural steel fabrication and installation. Pact Steel delivers steel structures for a variety of construction ventures, such as highend architectural homes, townhouse developments, warehouses and bridges. As well, the team has proven capability in the design and build space, having recently completed a premium 13-unit development in the Hautapu industrial precinct on the outskirts of Cambridge with easy access to the Waikato Expressway and State Highway 1B. Pact Steel was contracted by Bryton Properties as the head contractor to deliver this project, with the directors of Pact Steel also being shareholders of Bryton properties. “When we bought the land, we saw a huge opportunity for an industrial hub for small businesses in Hautapu/Cambridge,” says Aaron. “Over the past five years, the Hautapu area has seen some significant growth. With this comes business growth and a need for workspaces that can be owned and occupied by small businesses. We have also seen investors jumping on this opportunity.” Located on Peake Road, the development’s warehouse units range in size from 100sqm to 180sqm and are finished with smart colour steel cladding and front roller doors. Each clear span, high stud unit has a kitchenette and toilet plus dedicated parking. “All are finished and have code of compliance. We’re now just waiting for title in January. Our target market has been small-scale industrial businesses, with most of the units sold to tradespeople like plumbers and electricians who will use their space for storage, workshop and offices.” The Hautapu area is on track to become a logistics hub, as it is ideally situated for freight through to Auckland or the Port of Tauranga. Aaron says Pact Steel’s future at Hautapu is exciting. “We are thrilled to be working on another large industrial building in Hautapu, which will fall in the second quarter of 2023 with a structural steel package of approximately 300 tonnes, and our estimating team is busy tendering on more buildings in the area.” Aaron and Morgan share a background in engineering, having worked together on projects in the UK and around New Zealand. Since launching Pact Steel in 2019, they have grown the company to a team of 12 that includes a management team, estimators and site crew. “We have recently taken over our new fabrication facility in Ngāruawāhia, where we will have a fully equipped workshop with automated machinery to enhance our supply capabilities to meet demand. “Our growth to date has been rapid. We have a young team with a big future ahead of us. Everyone is keen to learn and grow together and we’re always looking for more good people to come on board too. Our focus in 2023 is on training and investing back into our people.” Pact Steel plans to explore opportunities for further project development work in the months ahead. “That would either be with other partners or on our own, depending on what comes up. We have good working relationships with subcontractors that we drew on for the Hautapu development and that also fed into our success through the Covid years.” As Aaron observes, Pact Steel had only been operating for a year when the first lockdown happened and getting through Covid as a relatively new business was challenging. “To get to where we are now has been a big achievement. Looking into 2023 is exciting for Pact Steel. We are working with a number of construction companies around the region and look forward to growing our relationships with these clients.” GA Pickford Roofing LTD supplies and installs a range of roofing solutions, using the best in roofing materials and technologies throughout Hamilton and the Waikato region. 0800 766 3349 | info@gaproofing.co.nz | www.gaproofing.co.nz 0800 PH DAMDOORS (0800 74 3263 ) sales@damdoors.co.nz | www.damdoors.co.nz | 118 Greenwood Street, Frankton, Hamilton Proud to supply Pact Steel with commercial roller shutter doors Proud to support Pact Steel Crane Hire, Hiabs, ATF and Transport | Bay of Plenty / Waikato Call 0508 McLeod anytime 24/7 | www.mcleod.nz
