| 45 MANUFACTURING Sun Guard Rachel Graham From shade to whole new living spaces Exterior blinds, including drop down screens, retractable awnings and fixed pergolas. Sunguard’s shades don’t just offer comfort and protection from the midday sun but can create whole new living spaces for you to enjoy. Alex Arutyunov is the business owner and managing director of Sunguard, based in Rosedale, in Auckland. The business has been offering a wide range of interior and exterior blinds for the about four and half years. Alex says one of their most popular products is exterior blinds, including drop down screens, retractable awnings and fixed pergolas. He says the exterior blinds allow people to virtually create an extra room in their house, and are a perfect choice for decks, home patios, restaurants and cafes. “It also provides you with shelter from the UV rays and from the heat, which you can use all year round. And something people often don’t consider, but the exterior sunshades can also shade the inside of the house as well. So it can help control the temperature inside the house throughout the year.” Alex says over the last couple of years as Covid-19 has disrupted people’s lives, many people are thinking more about the quality of life at home and looking at ways to increase their comfort in their own space. The blind fabrics come in a range of density depending on what your main objectives are – more privacy, protection for the wind, some shade while still getting to enjoy the view or UV protection. “The denser you go, the darker it will become inside,” says Alex, “and they will offer privacy and more heat protection. And the other way around. If you have a really nice view, we have fine mesh that will still provide you with a reasonable amount of heat protection, but you’ll still be able to see through and enjoy the view.” He says UV protection is also something people are becoming increasingly aware of the need for. The sunshades can help provide UV protection to both the people inside the house and stop your sofa and carpets fading due to the sun’s harsh rays. Alex says recently they have put up blinds around a few car ports, where people want to protect their car’s paint job, as well as get a bit more privacy. The blinds come in a huge range of colours, and the aluminium components are powder coated to any colour the customer prefers. In the interior roller blinds one option is to have a double blind, with two fabrics offering different benefits. “You could combine one block out blind, and another mesh blind or a light filter,” says Alex. “It just allows you to maintain more versatility. During the day people generally use the sunscreen but then at night when they want a bit more privacy just pull the blocker down.” Alex says having two different fabrics can completely change the look of the room in an instant. Sunguard offers a free in-home measurement and consultation across the greater Auckland area, and can provide quotes and installation in Coromandel, Waikato and Northland. They can ship products New Zealand wide. The blinds are all custom-made, and Alex’s friendly team can either come out to measure up and show you options, or you can get an estimate via their website. The products are all custom made here in New Zealand using imported fabrics and componentry. Alex says their aim is to offer people more options to make their home as liveable as possible.
