84 | HOTY: Karl Kampenhout Builder Ltd Sustainability at the core of award success The exterior walls and roof spaces feature the use of Mammoth insulation throughout and the use of the APL architectural joinery suite incorporated the use of Solux Low E glazing. from page 82 BUILDING Sustainability was at the forefront of Karl Kampenhout Builder’s regional gold and category award winning home at the 2022 Registered Master Builders House of the Year competition. The contemporary country home sits on the outskirts of Cambridge township, in a semi-rural setting surrounded by hills and features locally sourced natural Hinuera stone for the exterior wall cladding, a unique stone to the Waikato that previously formed old riverbed terraces. Ensuring comfort for people living in the home was important. Large, double-glazed joinery units that help to ensure that the sun enters these spaces encase the north facing living rooms of the home. The lightly polished concrete floors help with solar mass gains in the wintertime when the sun is low and can help release heat to these spaces. They have also been fitted out with a hydronic underfloor heating system. The exterior walls and roof spaces feature the use of Mammoth insulation throughout and the use of the APL architectural joinery suite incorporated the use of Solux Low E glazing. All timbers that have been used in the outdoor entertaining areas are FSC rated. Karl says that sustainability extends to the design with the mono pitch roofing ensuring the home fits into the landscape. The home has been shaped to provide sheltered outdoor areas and offer framed views to the grounds and hills beyond. Internally the spaces consist of various celling heights and angles, creating a dramatic entry, hallway celling spaces and snug seating areas. The ceilings are also complemented with rich cedar sarking in the entry, hallway, kitchen and dining. The three bedrooms and large office can provide multi use options for those who work from home or may require a fourth bedroom. Large stacking joinery items lead onto the north facing deck entertaining/seating area. Karl Kampenhout Builder caters for all aspects of building a new home, from initial discussions and ideas of the concept, to the final completion of quality new homes, additions and alterations. The company also completes light commercial projects such as early childhood centres and more challenging builds such as off-the-grid homes. Also provided are building services for creative pool designs, fences, retaining walls, decks/pergolas and landscaping. Karl is proud that most work is by word of mouth and reflects his strong focus on customer service. “My business has been built on reputation. It’s 100% word of mouth; my last build is where my next build comes from. I’m very proud of that.” P 07 889 5199 E admin@miljoinery.co.nz W miljoinery.co.nz For All Of Your Joinery Needs Design service available | View our showroom!
