Sue Russell BUILDING Celebrating five years of age for your business is quite a big thing when you consider the shadow COVID has had on the building sector. For Matt Vickers (the ‘V’) and Hayden Gamble (the ‘G’) the journey to date has been a very good experience. “When we started, it was just Hayden and I. Now we’re at the point where we’re running two crews. We are now part-time on the tools as well as working on the business, project management, pricing and following new leads,” Matt explains. The company is based in Whatawhata and takes on home building projects all over Waikato. When Business North spoke with Matt, they were getting quite involved in building homes at Rangitahi, a new sub-division that’s been transforming the Raglan landscape these past three years or so. “We’ve just completed a renovation in East Street in Raglan and will be engaged in another two projects in Rangitahi.” Stressing that key to their success to date has been their focus on client engagement Matt says. “We want our clients to enjoy every moment of their home being built. We know there are so many decisions to make and we aim to keep communication open throughout the build. We’re flexible and care very much about the quality of the experience and the quality of the build.” It’s all, he says, about being collaborative. “When you are flexible with the client it’s not about there being one defined process. It’s about getting as much information as possible, to achieve the very best from their budget.” Matt says that engagement and working to find the very best design outcome is a part of the job he really enjoys. “Helping people into homes is a really great feeling. With good conversation from the outset everyone can build a home they can enjoy living in, regardless of the budget. “They really wanted the house to be a usable home, they knew what they wanted and were great to work with. It was similar to a house they had lived in but they wanted to improve on some of the design elements.” This year, G V Homes entered an ‘entertainers-dream’ of a home, built on the outskirts of Te Awamutu, into the Waikato Master Builders House of the Year awards. The 255sqm home was designed with entertaining in mind, with open spaces and significant kwila decking connecting indoor with outdoor. The judges were so impressed they awarded G V Homes with a Gold Award in the $500,000 - $750,000 category. “The owners were relocating down from Auckland to be closer to their grandchildren. They really wanted the house to be a usable home, they knew what they wanted and were great to work with. It was similar to a house they had lived in but they wanted to improve on some of the design elements,” says Matt. The build happened during COVID, however Matt says with forward-thinking planning they managed to complete the build on time. “There was a lot of work behind the scenes, for sure.” Matt’s keen to get into house design and to see what can be achieved on a conservative budget, but without cutting any corners in the process. “It’s a project for myself and I’m determined to not reduce the quality of materials used but to get a really great, quality home with clever design in mind.” Along with new builds, the team also undertakes renovation work, and at any one time are able to be involved in four to six projects. “The thing we have got right is our team. We have always committed to training our guys and allowing them to move up. One of the big parts of our growth is making sure the guys are growing with us.” Team culture is big at G V Homes and Matt says it’s the most important thing. “We’ve worked hard to evolve our culture which is inclusive of everyone who works with us. That’s what has made us the success we are today.” 0279415004 maggie@gingerbristles.co.nz gingerbristles.co.nz TOP PAINTER, PROFESSIONAL AND RELIABLE.
