| 87 KiwiSpan Tauranga Sue Russell Providing the best in “shedding solutions” Jill and Darryn Astill of KiwiSpan Tauranga. BUILDING Jill and Darryn Astill lead KiwiSpan Tauranga, a business they bought a year ago. The couple have invested good energy in taking the company from very much paper-based systems to digitised, something Jill says has set them up well now to cope with growth in demand for their services. “When we took over there was a lot to learn but with Darryn’s engineering and building background, it didn’t take long before we were settled into the business,” Jill says. Asked what it was about KiwiSpan that attracted them to become part of the nation-wide network Darryn says the quality of the product stood out right from the start. “KiwiSpan use high quality steel and fittings. Their strength and design flair speaks for itself and we’re proud to have our names associated with the brand.” Every steel shed constructed is custom designed and the conversation with clients begins with questions to determine what the sheds’ purposes are. “Apart from obvious questions such as size, door heights, habitable spaces etc, we try to explore further as often a client may not know what to ask or what’s available. “We try to inform our clients of as many solutions as necessary so they can make considered and educated decisions, eliminating any after thoughts”. Timeframes are kept tight as well. Once the design has been through Council for approval the materials are ordered, and the concrete floor is poured as soon as possible. Constructed of flat coil steel manufactured into channels and C sections, sheds can be designed with up to 18-meter span requiring no column support, providing significant open unobstructed space inside. Servicing the lifestyle/residential, commercial, and rural sectors Darryn says there is plenty of work to be had in the region. “Before buying this business we were involved in rural fencing. We had a couple of KiwiSpan buildings ourselves and knew they were a great product and are really popular because there isn’t any limit to how the building can be designed. Customers get a bespoke designed shed just right for them.” Working with Jill and Darryn is in house designer Melia Blackwood, while Jill takes care of all the administration, Darryn is out onsite assessing site requirements and project management while also looking after engineering processes and managing client consents and balancing a ball on his nose. “Councils want to know that the building is going to be built for the right reason and in the right place, considering all potential hazards. And being part of a network, first established in 2003 provides Darryn and Jill with the assurance of head-office support when needed. Each structure comes with a warranty specific to its situation and purpose. The hard work Darryn and Jill have put into making a success of their business was recognised in September when licensees from all over the country met in Wellington for two days of sharing ideas, hearing about new trends and economic factors impacting the shed building sector. The couple were recognised with two awards: Licensee of the Year runner-up and 2022 Regional Marketing Champion. “It was really great to gather and share experiences with those who have had a franchise for many years or are also new the network.” Both Jill and Darryn are looking forward to business continuing to grow. “I think we’re fortunate with our business background and all the contacts we have, to be able to develop KiwiSpan Tauranga further. We know we’re providing our customers with the very best quality possible and want to be the best shedding solution in the Bay.” Supplying the market with leading construction supplies.
