BUILDING Enjoying the fruits of success Deane and Brenda Hogg always wanted to own their own business and five years ago, they did just that, purchasing Totalspan Hamilton/King Country. “There’s something really satisfying about being in charge of your own success. It was an existing franchise for about 15 years and we thought we could develop the business further.” When COVID came along, preventing people spending their discretionary income on overseas travel, Deane and Brenda experienced a large increase in demand for their steel framed buildings. Totalspan Hamilton/King Country offers customers a wide range of steel buildings from smaller utility-type sheds, through to commercial, residential, lifestyle and rural buildings. Part of the nation-wide Totalspan group, Deane and Brenda supply buildings from Huntly in the north, to Raglan, Cambridge and Taumarunui/Mokau in the south. When you consider that area, and the amount of rural farming activity, horticulture, life-style sections of all shapes and sizes, there’s plenty of demand. “Each building comes with a comprehensive warranty, covering 25-years for the structure and 5-years for workmanship. Our sales manager, Dave, has been selling Totalspan buildings for 17+years now and has extensive product knowledge and great experience dealing with council requirements concerning the building consent process. Dave can also process the building consent on our client’s behalf if the client wishes.” Given their catchment area Deane and Brenda have become experienced dealing with six different council by-laws and consenting pathways. As a modular system, customers can personalise a building to exactly their needs and purposes. Brenda says some customers have a clear idea of what they want in their building, while others just have a general wish-list. “We enjoy assisting them to find the right solution to fit their needs.” They also offer the option of fully-built turnkey buildings or kit-set only if the customer desires that. Asked what appealed to them about becoming a franchisee, Deane says there were several reasons. “It is New Zealand’s most recognised and respected brand and has been around for 30 plus years. There’s a very supportive structure in the background for franchise owners. It’s a very successful New Zealand privately owned company.” “There’s a very supportive structure in the background for franchise owners. It’s a very successful New Zealand privately owned company.” Only New Zealand steel is used, something both Deane and Brenda are proud of. “It’s good to think our business is supporting local manufacturers”. Pre COVID, normal lead-time was in the vicinity of 3 to 4 months. However, with the current levels of high demand and material supply issues this has blown out to 9+ months. Deane says the material supply issues are showing signs of abating now and we are actively trying to recruit more staff to meet this demand and bring their lead-time back to pre-COVID levels. “On that note, if you are interested in becoming part of our building team, please give us a call,” says Deane. And feedback from customers is actively sought. “We encourage people to do google reviews on the performance of their sheds and the quality of service they received from us as we think this is the best way for others to understand the quality we stand by.” Located in Te Rapa, Hamilton the Totalspan centre is open five days a week and Saturday’s by appointment. “We’re very pleased we made the decision to purchase this business and we haven’t looked back. We have great staff working for us and demand continues to grow,” Deane and Brenda say.
