94 | Mace Landscape Group Rachel Graham Family firm creates enduring legacy LANDSCAPING Whether you are after a sanctuary within your inner-city property or the creation of greenspace in a commercial environment, Mace Landscape Group can help with all your needs. The Auckland-based company was started by Neville Mace 47 years ago, who ran the business with his wife Val. Michelle Mace, Neville and Val’s daughter, and Brent Carly joined Neville as directors in 2018, and have now worked for the company for 15 years and 20 years respectively. Michelle Mace says she and Brent are excited to have an opportunity to continue to build on the legacy that Neville and Val started, and explains how the company continues to grow today. Mace Landscape Group started out primarily doing commercial work, and is now one of the bigger companies in Auckland capable of taking on large scale commercial projects. Michelle says design and build projects, both commercial and residential, are now the major focus as the company has expanded its services over the years to include specialist teams for different parts of the market. Entering projects into the Registered Master Landscapers Landscapes of Distinction Awards is a great way to acknowledge all of the effort their team put into their craft says Michelle, and the pride the company takes in that work. Mace Landscape Group again did well in this year’s Landscape of Distinction Awards with multiple medals being awarded for each of their entries; Greenhithe Residence, Herne Bay Residence, Clevedon Residence and Tamaoho School. Categories spanned design, construction and horticulture and accolades won included three gold, three silver and a bronze award. Michelle says entries capture a real cross-section of what the company does. “Tamaoho School was a project that had a great ethos as a new school looking to inspire young learners and reflect the local area,” says Michelle. “It was also one where we were involved with both the construction and soft-landscaping elements, so a lot went into the project management to deliver something of the highest standard for our client.” The residential entries highlight the kind of work Mace Landscape Group does for two of its key clientele – an inner city home looking to create a modern sanctuary, and a lifestyle property with lots of space to create a rural retreat. “The Herne Bay residence focused on understated elegance, taking cues from the modern interior. I think it was the finer details on this one that made it successful. “The Clevedon property was a family homestead that had amazing outdoor space to work within. The natural surrounds were a great starting point to integrate a family entertaining space.” Michelle says the Greenhithe Residence was a design-only project and involved a challenging site but an open brief, which gave their landscape architect a great chance to get creative. She says these projects also showcased a range of speciality products from key suppliers which help Mace Landscape Group achieve that wow factor through creating something truly bespoke. Michelle Mace says while Mace Landscape Group has grown substantially since her dad started it almost fifty years ago they still think of themselves as a family business. She says the key to this is the great team who are all passionate about what they do. “It can be a challenge to keep that family-feel sometimes as the company gets busier, but it’s all about growing together”. “Tamaoho School was a project that had a great ethos as a new school looking to inspire young learners and reflect the local area.” Mace Landscape Group’s award-winning Tamaoho School project.
