100 | Ability to scale an asset “For the last six to eight years we’ve been building beautiful bespoke homes all around the Cambridge district,” says Jono McCullough, of Rob Ray Builders. T T from page 98 Rob May Builders BUILDING Plus we have the ability to scale which is why we get some of our jobs from the big national companies like Ryman or Mike Greer Homes. We can go from 15 to 25 pretty quickly.” It also means that at the same time as they’re building Ryman’s new Sir Patrick Hogan Retirement Village they can be building the bespoke homes that make up a lot of their workload, and building them to the exacting standards they require. A strong focus on apprentices sees them taking on two every year giving them anywhere from five to eight in the company at any one time. Rob May Builders’ enthusiasm for a variety of jobs means they’re training their own guys, which in turns allows them to deliver the quality of work that is their hallmark. “We get our guys from day one and turn them into tradesmen but also part of that is giving them the opportunity to really develop the skill set they need to be quality builders,” says Jono. While their architectural builds may only involve standing frames or putting up trusses once in a year, because they take on jobs with the likes of Mike Greer Homes as well, their tradies have likely already had a year putting up 10 lots of frames and 10 lots of trusses. “The young fellas need that repetitive nature to really learn their trade, and we give them so much exposure to so much different stuff that’s what I believe sets us apart from our competition,” explains Jono. Having done his own apprenticeship working largely on beautiful bespoke homes, Jono had then done a lot of work on subdivisions and in the education sector, so when setting up his own company he wanted to get back to the work he trained in. “I felt we could offer something there and we certainly do. For the last six to eight years we’ve been building beautiful bespoke homes all around the Cambridge district. “We’re currently building a multi-million dollar home which is around 400 square metres and it’s a fully passive home right down to the last detail of energy conductivity in the concrete floor. It sits on top of a bank overlooking the Waikato River with a swimming pool right on the edge which had to go in first which was a feat of engineering in itself. The house is a stunner. It’s got that American lofty look that you see in the movies, two story with a lot of plywood and structural steel in it, and big vaulted ceilings six metres high at least.” While they enjoy building these multi-million dollar houses Rob May Builders are still open to jobs of all shapes and sizes, from renovations to high end commercial infrastructure and everything in between, and, they appreciate the people who help them make it happen. They see their head foreman Cam van den Broek, who was their first ever employee and is on the brink of buying into the company, and Chris Guzzwell their Operations Manager, as both being critical to their success. “Paula and I are both passionate about our team. We couldn’t be where we are or do what we do without them, and we love it. The big thing I love is turning up with a client and seeing an empty site, whether it’s a paddock or a section in town, and then turning that person’s dream into a reality,” says Jono. With the legend ‘A Place of Dreams and Realities’ there for all to see in their boardroom it’s a mission statement the whole team are happy to get behind to make it a reality for Rob May Builders.
